I have been online shopping banjos quite... extensively. Ebay, Amazon, 3 dozen+ online shops, reviews from multitude of sources, investigating manufacturer home sites, etc. I did the same for this banjo, and although there is actually very little out there about this particular banjo, I still felt very comfortable with what little I put together information wise. And frankly, at this price, it gets my warmest recommendation for those on a tight budget (sometimes, you just can't afford 400+ dollars for a mainstream name beginner brand). Additionally, mine came very well setup from the seller (aside from the inevitable tuning). And its purty too! I would also deeply recommend Snark SN-2 All Instrument Clip-On Chromatic Tuner ... absolutely the best tuner I have ever used and makes the various banjo-tuning schemes a breeze.

Be aware, in order to avoid possible confusion, Jameson Guitars is actually a sub-brand of Davison Guitars, so if you order and look at your peg-head and it says Davison (like mine does) and not R.W. Jameson, its the same maker (yes, I examined Davison's home site as well as the Amazon Seller's).

So...after watching local Craigslist and eBay auctions for weeks & weeks, I was wondering if I would ever find a decent starter banjo without running a huge risk. So I visited Amazon, spotted this listing, read all 34 reviews, and decided that if even a few of the reviews were authentic (and the images were true), I had to give this banjo a try...

I ordered it late Sunday night - and Tuesday afternoon a knock on the door signaled its arrival. Wow.

The box/packing was untouched(undamaged), and this during the Christmas holidays.

The banjo - for the price mind you - was absolutely a pleasant surprise, and this from a veteran (25+ yrs) guitar player with at least 10 guitars of all brands & price ranges. Yes, a bit lighter than the Morgan Monroe starter banjo I'd just bought a week earlier for daughter#1's boyfriend, but still clearly a well-crafted instrument. Nice selection and assembly of wood. Nice fretboard and inlays. VERY nice ivory-colored binding on BOTH the neck AND the resonator. WOOD resonator. Decent (not amazing, but functional) tuners, though I could already see that IF I like this banjo, this will be among the first/only things I'd think about replacing with planetary gear tuners. Out-of-the-box action - actually perfectly acceptable, and this is something I normally IMMEDIATELY adjust with EVERY new guitar I've ever had, as I like very low action. But this one is "low enough" that I'll leave it for now, and was immediately able to start using finger picks and still finger the frets nicely. Overall sound - not horribly loud (resonator ring is wood - NOT metal), but perfectly loud enough for me.

There's a single minor finish flaw on the back - a tiny thin 2" wrinkle in the finish. Big F-ing deal.
The finish on the neck feels like glass.

Got this for my 15 y.o. daughter for Christmas and she loves it. She had been fooling around with her brothers 4 sting $400 Goodtime banjo so I was worried that this one would be a piece of junk compared to his. She has not put down her banjo and has not played his since Christmas morning. The only thing that we had a problem with was the 5th sting key was very tight and we were afraid it was going to break. With a little patience it loosened up and we were good to go. Very happy with this purchase. Great banjo for a beginner.

This banjo is beautifully crafted. It plays very well right out of the box without additional set-up, except for a little tuning. If you are looking for a beginning banjo, this one is very nice. With a closed back (resonator) it would usually be used by BlueGrass players, but if you want you can easily take the resonator off and play it clawhammer or frailing style.

Within 10 minutes of taking it out of the box, I had woken up my roommate and we have pretty thick walls. This thing resonates and sounds great. I just ordered a mute to try to keep from disturbing my roommate or neighbors during late night pickin. I'm really impressed with how solid and clean sounding this thing is for under $200. I'd buy again.

Not perfect, but great value for the money. Only single rod holding neck, and wooden frame a bit rough on the inside. External surfaces nicely finished (but again not perfect). Nit picking though--if this was a $500+ banjo I'd be disappointed, but for a $150 banjo this is an amazing value. Just recognize that if you get good on the banjo you'll be upgrading. But then again, you can probably sell this for around what you have in it. Nice transaction, fast shipping. Recommended.

I had no experience playing a banjo and was looking for something inexpensive to give it a go, in the hopes that I could eventually play some old-time mountain music with my wife. I had gone to my local music stores and played around with some of the inexpensive banjos ($200 or less) and just wasn't impressed with the sound or the quality of any of them. I found this banjo on Amazon, read the reviews, and decided to take a chance. I've had the banjo for a few months now, and I couldn't be happier. (This review will be in the context of a $150 instrument. Obviously if you compare this banjo to a $750 Deering, this banjo might not be quite as impressive. Or maybe it would. It's awesome.)

The banjo arrived undamaged and packed safely. I had to tighten up the arm guard, and also file down a sharp bur on the arm guard before playing, but other than that the instrument was strung up with the bridge placed correctly and completely ready to play after some tuning.

As far as looks go, the banjo is beautiful. It may lack some of the frilly details of pricier banjos, but honestly, who cares? My wife is a professional musician and we own a large array of stringed instruments (guitars, mandolins, violins) ranging from cheapies to professional grade. We were completely impressed with the construction quality of this thing. If you've ever purchased a cheap guitar you know they usually have several annoying qualities; common ones being insanely high action and terrible finish where the frets meet the neck of the instrument. I had noticed those same flaws on the cheap banjos I tried in the stores and expected that this banjo would be no different. I'm happy to report that's not the case.
