My onboard LAN is crap, and I need one wired connection for potential network troubleshooting purposes, so I wanted an inexpensive PCIe card. Nothing fancy, just a plain old wired connection. I installed this card and booted to Ubuntu, which picked up the card and connected fine. Then, I booted to Win7 to check that, but it needed a driver. I put the minidisc that came with the card in the drive, expecting to see the installation for some useless and entirely unnecessary "connection manager" software, but I was wrong...lo and behold, there was a beautiful little INF! I installed the driver and the card works great. It's been a long, long time since I've come across a piece of hardware that came with *just* the driver I need to make it work. No crappy software that I refuse to install because it's not necessary, it sucks resources I could better use for something else and pisses me off because it plops itself into startup without being invited. No digging the driver out of said crappy software install file because I refuse to actually install it. Just. The. Driver. I was practically moved to tears.

I'm going to have to say this is the best value in this product space. The Realtek chip used is really quite reliable, and I'm not easy to please. The Intel chip is better performance wise, but only by about 5% on the top end, however costs at least double, if not more. 95% of people won't be able to tell the difference in the performance even if they try pretty hard, and in the application this will be used, it won't be an issue anyway since maximum network traffic bursts will be in the 20MB/s range, at least for a few years. It's power consumption, about 1 watt at idle or very low traffic, is quite acceptable, and I'm also a stickler about that. An exceedingly simple card like this is hard to screw up, and they didn't, so that's a good sign. If you really need those 5,000 additional management features available on the Intel based card, go ahead and spend 4x what this one costs. Or is it 5x? I think I paid $10 for this one. Once, only once, did we try a card based on the Via chip. That card is in the trash now.

Pay no attention to people saying it didn't work on their Windows box. If someone doesn't have the expertise to get the driver on to their Windows box, they shouldn't be adding cards to their box by themselves as it is. Any up-to-date version of Windows 7 or later has the driver already. And, of course, the card comes with a mini-cd with the driver on it, and it can be downloaded off the internet quite easily. If you're trying to add this card to a box that is 10 years old, well, bravo to you, but you will have to get creative unless you are running software that's newer than your box. We use Linux, and the driver has been in Linux distros for at least a year now. Even if the Linux release that you're running is a couple of years old, if you've been updating your kernel like you should be, you have the driver.

Let's face it, most new motherboards are going with more PCI-E 1x slots and less standard PCI slots as time progresses. More often than not, the layout of modern mainboards almost always guarantees that your PCI slot will be blocked by something (I'm looking at you double wide graphics card!).

Almost as common of a dilemma is the chance of your integrated network adapter dying on you.

This particular gigabit adapter works a charm, although I recommend using the official TP-Link drivers from their website. I had a few bugs with the automatically installed Windows drivers and/or the Realtek drivers. Eventually I went to TP-Link's website and got the official drivers and now it works like a charm using Win7 x64!

We had a Dell machine at work that had its onboard NIC crap out on it. It runs Windows 7 SP1 X64. We needed a cheap, straightforward replacement to the dead NIC and this was the first result that popped up on Amazon.

One of the best things about this card was how simple and straightforward the packaging was. It came in a small box, about the size of an old video game cartridge. In it was the warranty info, install instructions, and minidisc driver CD. We popped it into the Dell and booted Windows 7 up. Windows 7 said a driver was unavailable. We stuck in the CD, pointed it to the Drivers folder on the CD and Windows was able to locate and install the drivers with no problems.

We didn't have to run any silly installers. It just worked. No harder than installing a graphics card. Seriously, it's amazing how quickly we got the computer up and running with zero problems and little effort. It took more time to wait for the computer to load than it did to install this card.

I have a Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3 motherboard and it seems to be a common problem that the onboard LAN stops working. Two years of having the board with no problems until recently, I tried all the fixes to no avail. So I looked around and came to this product, it was simple to install with helpful directions and at a great price.
I recommend this product.

I bought this when I found that my motherboard had only a 10/100 Mbps ethernet connection. I threw this in the open PCI-E slot, let windows find the drivers and I was set. It just uses the generic realtek chipset so the drivers aren't anything special.

The card itself is actually quite well constructed, the bracket is quite a solid piece of metal compared to other pci cards I have used before. Also has 4 LED's to tell you your connection speed. Overall not bad for only $16.
