Needed to fabricate some cross-pins for the pipe jaws on a 1955 Wilton C0 vise. This W1 tool steel fit the bill (sturdier than common steel rod, but still slightly malleable so it can flex slightly if needed).

Note that if you use an abrasive wheel to cut it, you're going to harden that spot even more, making any further fabrication (like flattening the end of the cut on a lathe) a little rougher on your tools.

Note: If you happen to also be rehabbing an early-model Wilton C0 vise with cross-pinned vise jaws, you'll soon find out that this rod is so perfectly sized that it doesn't "grab" in the cross-drilled hole. I solved this by just gouging a groove in the side with a cold chisel, so the deformation snags a bit. If you wanted to knurl it or something fancier like that, that could work. But, really, it's all hidden, so, who cares about fancy? Also, this is about 2x the bar stock that you need -- In my case, I just made a few steel drifts out of the remainder.

Very disappointed. I measured the diameter when I received the rod, and found it .021" too thin. It is described as precision rod, but it isn't. Don't bother unless diameter doesn't matter to you.

I've had really good luck with the W1 and O1 drill rod purchased here on Amazon. I use it to build chamber reamers, hole reamers, milling cutters, plus all sorts of other projects.
Initial accuaracy of the metal isn't a big deal as I usually true everything up in the lathe first, but everything that I have miked out of the box was spot on. For me, it is an economical way to get my shop tooling up and running.
Freight is really a big item when purchasing steel, but with Amazon Prime I am able to purchase small lots at very affordable pricing.
In short, I am quite happy with my drill rod orders (along with other metal orders)from Amazon and Small Parts as I haven't experienced any damaged goods as mentioned by others.
I'm quite happy and would recommend these to a friend.

Really inexpensive so I can't be harsh. The steel itself seems good. But the precision part of the description doesn't apply because it was bent when it arrived in a big box. It had to be bent before it was put in the box so my beef is with the person who pulled and packed the order.
