I discovered that harnesses are much safer than collars (the ones that are safe come off too easily) on CATS that are active and/or with you outside. When my Orange Tabby (Gidget) was a kitten, she loved being in the car so I started taking her with me when I took the kids to school. For safety reasons, I decided to get her a harness and leash. This was not an easy task because every harness I tried (made for cats) was disfunctional-- a problem I have experienced with numerous cat products (especially toys)! I believe that most designers, manufacturers, and distributers of cat supplies have little knowledge and/or interest in cat behavior!! What else would explain the fact that most accessories and toys, bought by the consumer because of a great concept (especially in regards to expensive interactive toys), end up having poor construction and/ or lack of emphases on materials, durability, and proportions suitable for this uniquely active, curious, and mischievious animal species.
After experimenting with dog harnesses, I discovered that (while a few fit), only the H-style fit well, stayed in place, and was comfortable through all of her daily activities-- jumping, climbing, playing, exploring, eating, napping... An added bonus-- being able to grab the cat easily. Since my initial experience with Gidget (she has a fit when I try to take her harness off), I have used H- harnesses on other cats.
Finding Hagen Catit, while searching on Amazon, was exciting and I have quickly discovered that, unlike previous experiences, THEIR HARNESS & LEASH SETS ARE AMAZING. We'd been using a normal collar and leash for our indoor cat whenever we let her come outside with us on our back deck. She's very comfortable wearing a collar, and we didn't have any concerns until she managed to squeeze under the deck and slide a couple feet to the dirt below. That wouldn't have been of concern, except that the leash didn't reach the entire way.
Luckily, the leash was only a few inches too short and she was able to stand on her back legs until we could reach her. We saw it happen, so we reacted immediately.
That scare is what prompted us to shop for a harness.
This harness has been working perfectly for us. Both neck and waist straps are easily adjustable and the extra strap around her stomach doesn't seemed to bother her at all. I think, the fact that this does not have anything that sits on her chest, is what makes it comfortable for her.
We also tried a vest style of harness, and a strap version that had a chest strap. Both of these styles bothered her because the vest and the chest strap got in the way when she settled down to groom herself - - she didn't like not being able to lick her chest.
A slight con, is that the leash and clasp rests on the cat's back, rather than hang from under their chin. This seems to bother her a teeny bit, but this is where a leash is secured with any type of harness-style device.
The clasps are easy for me to snap on and squeeze off, but my husband sometimes has a bit of a problem with his larger hands.
I'm not sure I'd feel completely comfortable leaving her unattended outside, but for spending family time outdoors with us, I'm very happy with this harness.
Overall, a secure, cute and comfortable way to keep kitty safe and happy.
