My home is modern with new steps in an offset and "floating" look. At night they are hard to see and distinguish where the next step is so I needed to light the edges to prevent any tripping hazard. These lights are perfect not only because they are modern and sleek but they also give just enough light as not to be so blinding or distracting. The body is aluminum. The light is softened by the opaque plastic lens. The stakes are thick and sturdy. The solar panel is located at the top. I do not get total sun during the day, but half sun and filtered sun. It appears to be enough to keep the lights on long enough thru the night. I liked them so much that I have ordered two more sets. Well worth the money spent. I have had other solar lights and have been disappointed but these seem to be bright enough and they do turn on!

i bought 9 boxes of this. total 36 lights. well, i do have a fairly large yard and these lights offer a unique look. however, i found 1 doa unit our of every 3 boxes i opened. likely it is caused by the way these lights are packaged. the LED sits on top of the cap itself, so a slight drop will likely damage it. all of them are pre-charged at the factory, so you can tell which ones are defective straight out of the box. best solution is to buy an extra box; giving how easy it is to return defective units back to amazon.

Only one star as that is how many of these lights are still working after being installed for about 6 weeks they each went out in turn. Avoid.

UPDATE - on a hunch I took one apart to see if it could be fixed. Despite the unit being in the CA sun all day, the battery was cold - a sign of not charging. After replacing the batteries in the defective units they came back up great (for now). Looks like the lights are fine, but the batteries they ship with are crap. Be prepared to shell out for more ones after about 3 months based on the failure rate I had and what has been reported elsewhere.

Update: I recently bought 2 more boxes of these, and within 2 weeks all but one failed. I've given up. I've changed to one star.
I originally bought two boxes of these, for a total of 8 lights. A quick test of each light showed that they would not turn on in the dark (hand over the sensor), so I assumed the batteries must have totally discharged. Yes, I turned the switch from off to auto. I installed the lights thinking that 10 hours of San Diego sun would charge them up. Imagine my surprise when NONE if the lights illuminated once it got dark. Since its unfathomable that all these lights had failed, I opened one up and replaced the battery with a simple AA alkaline. The light lit up like a champ. So now I don't know if I have 8 bad batteries or 8 bad charging cells. Either one seems very unlikely, but that's where I am now. Tomorrow I try with a different rechargeable battery in one to see if the charging circuit works. Either way, these are going back. I should not have to buy 8 new batteries right out of the gate.

Update: The next morning I examined the lights more closely. I found that hitting the side of the units (the part with the light, battery, photo cell) would turn them on. I went from light to light doing this, and each of them responded by working when I covered the sensor with my hand. Why the heck would each of these lights be totally dead but respond to a firm rap on the side? I also pulled out a couple of batteries and noticed that they are only cheap 300mAh rechargables. Compare this to the typical 2300mAh or better rechargeable batteries and you can buy anywhere. Maybe the 300mAh is enough to keep an LED light illuminated for 8 hours on full charge, but I'm currently charging some 2300mAh batteries that I had in a drawer so I can use them with these lights.

This is the third time I have ordered these lights. I have a very long driveway with drainage ditches on both sides. I really use them to keep people from backing off of my drive, however, I like the sleek modern look very much. That have given me great service. The main reason that I keep ordering them is because they get run over. Amazon is the best price that I have seen on this item. NO ONE IN THE DITCH YET !!

I bought these because I liked the design. I was hoping to light up the walk and porch outside my front door as it is in shadow at night. It is so dark, I can't see where to put the key in the door. However, I hate leaving the front lights on at my house when I am gone, so this is how I solved it. They put out just enough light to illuminate the walk and see the door and key hole. This area does not get a lot of direct sunlight, just a few hours in the morning, but they last all night long. Maybe not in the Winter when the days are shorter.

A few hints about these:

If your soil is hard or dense, pop the black base off the unit and push just that into the ground. This way you won't possibly break the plastic tube these are made of. Plus, it is easier to push straight down on the top of the base. If you have clay like I do, then pour a couple of cups of water on the spot and let it soak in so the soil softens. The bottom bases are not that strong enough to push into rock hard clay. People who have normal soil can just push these right in (bases I mean).

You can turn some units off if they are not needed for a while, but leave them in the ground. There is a switch in the upper cap that turns the unit on and off. It is on by default, but if yours is not working check that first.

The only bad thing is one of the units quit working after 2 days. The sellers were great to work with in dealing with this issue. The seller was courteous and prompt in dealing with this and the issue was resolved fairly.
