I bought this product without having read any of the reviews (how daring!). I just finished making 100+ mini cupcakes and THEN decided to come on here and see what other folks had to say. Fear not, disappointed bakers, for I think I have a couple of tips to make your lives easier!

1. "A lot of batter is wasted because it sticks to the inside of the pen." I actually saw this one coming, and what worked for me was to spray a little Pam around the inside before adding the batter.

2. "Batter gets all over the counter when I try to put it in the pen." I think this was just dumb luck, but my only clean mixing bowl was a flexible plastic one. I was able to bend it enough to make a nice pouring spout. The nice thing about cheap, thin mixing bowls is that they're, well, cheap. Pick one up and see if it helps.

3. "The nozzle spurts when sucking in air." Yep, had that happen to me. Got around it by tipping the whole shebang at an angle while filling up my cupcake pans. That way the incoming air bubble goes up and to the side of the batter coming down the chute.

4. "Had some leaking around the lid(s)." That can happen with flexible plastic like this. All I can say is, unless you can see a genuine defect somewhere, just make sure everything's lined up before you get to work.

I don't think I'd use this cupcake pen for regular-sized cupcakes/muffins (easier to use a measuring cup) or plain ol' circular pancakes. However, it's great for mini-cupcakes and I can see it being perfect for shaped pancakes.

I love the concept of the idea. It does help distribute batter evenly and make your cupcake tops bake smoothly. Getting the batter in the bottle is a little challenging, so a funnel is definitely in order.

What I found is that this works excellently, until it is less than 1/2 to 1/3 full. Then you are really squeezing repeatedly to get the rest of the batter out, and inevitably, I lost some batter equivalent to 2 cupcakes or so (sticks to the inside of the bottle).

I am surprised to see so many bad reviews about this item as I have nothing except GOOD to say about it, aside that it is a bit expensive for a bit of plastic. I suppose you are paying for the concept/invention.
It is so easy to use. As suggested by the others: mix batter in a plastic jug which has a spout so that you can POUR the batter into the bigger hole of the pen. Pour it over the sink if you have shaky hands.
The good thing about this is that you can STORE the batter in the bottle and leave it in fridge for use the next day. I often make enough pancake batter for use over two days. The best thing about this item is that it produces consistent size mini cup-cakes. It does not drip if you don't squeeze it so hard that it squirts out from the thread of the screw-top/ring. It is also ideal for DROP scones/small pancakes as it produce even size drop scones.
There is a difference between the brown and the green one. The brown has a BIGGER nozzle (half-inch diameter) and is for cupcakes.

I have a small bakery/restaurant on the beach in Mexico and I make a LOT of cupcakes. I LOVE this tool. Yes, you need a funnel. Wasn't that obvious? I use a canning funnel for the larger hole. When I am making a lot of cuppies, I use 2 of the pens, one for chocolate and one for vanilla and I can even make cool swirl cupcakes by using them both in the same cupcake paper. You DO need a small spatula to push down what remains on the sides to the bottom of the pen. I fill it with the cap on the "pen" end and nothing leaks out while filling. I used to avoid cupcakes because it took so long and was so messy to fill all the little papers and clean off what you spilled on your cupcake pans. I delight in them now and the profit margin is so much more than an entire cake. People will buy a six pack or even a dozen before a cake, especially since they can mix and match flavors and/or colors!

Holds 3 cups of batter, which is roughly 2/3 of the batter from a standard box of cake mix. I suppose it might be nice if it held a whole mix, but then the "pen" would be too unwieldy. For our small household, though, the size is just right - I can bake half the batter and save the rest in the pen for baking another day.

The body of the pen has volume markings on it. I'm not inclined to mix batter in the pen itself (it might be okay for runny/liquid mixes?), but it's nice to know how much is left.

I especially like that the pen disassembles easily for thorough cleaning. There are 5 pieces: silicone spout, hard plastic top, hard plastic bottom, translucent squeezable body, and snap-tight clear plastic storage top. What a relief to discover that the silicone spout was removable! The top and bottom pieces are of slightly different diameter, so you won't be able to mix them up.

The "extra wide" silicone tip is not wide enough for, say, whole blueberries. Standard chocolate morsels do not flow through well, but mini morsels would be fine. Thin batters run through quickly. Thicker batters (cupcakes, pancakes) are ideal. Brownie batter would be too thick, in my opinion.

Yes, it's one more thing to clean in addition to the mixing bowl - but I always get drips on the counter and down the side of the mixing bowl (spouted or not), whereas the pen provides a much cleaner delivery.

I am very happy with this gadget. It's especially useful when filling small cups (mini muffins and mini cupcakes, in my case). And it's great for small children who want to help in the kitchen. I also find it useful for camping - I mix the batter, then store it in the pen in the cooler until ready to cook.
