By Grateful Jerry VINE VOICE on September 17, 2010
This is a good show with some clear highlights although for the first few songs everyone seems very laid back except for Jerry. The band opens with a sluggish Truckin' and then slightly off versions of Bertha and Playing In The Band with Jerry unleashing some blistering licks. Deal and Jack Straw are both okay but the show picks up with Loser with the whole band now hitting their stride. Beat It On Down The Line is a fun song and is quite enjoyable. The show hits a serious level with a great jam of Dark Star->El Paso->Dark Star->Casey Jones. It's funny to still hear some of the band playing Dark Star when El Paso starts (sort of a Dark Paso). The first set ends with a new One More Saturday Night.

The second set starts with a good Me And My Uncle. Ramble On Rose and Mexicali Blues show up in early version and are quite nice. Both Brokedown Palace and Me And Bobby McGee are also in fine form and I love the early '70's versions of these along with You Win Again. The set ends with a rocking Not Fade Away->Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad->Not Fade Away. I should point out that several of the songs were new with this tour as was Keith Godchaux. The bonus disc was outtakes from the night before.

I'm really impressed by the two '71 Road Trips and this one is another high-energy performance from the year, with some tremendous highlights.
While I would single out the 'China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider' and 'The Other One>Me and My Uncle>The Other One' from Road Trips Vol.1 No.3: Summer '71 it is the Dark Star>El Paso>Dark Star on this one that floats my boat and propels it so far out to sea.
It stands proud and tall among the many great incarnations of this Titan of exploratory jamming vehicles and has some beautiful, subtle moments and melodic lines, with especially terrific interplay between Jerry and Keith (and everyone else of course) and remains compelling right through.
All the standards are played with fiery flair and the longer, improvisatory passages are very strong.
There are some roughly recorded moments throughout the two discs, (I couldn't get the bonus disc- my tough luck!) but not enough to distract or detract, in my view.
Keith is still fresh on the scene here, but of course is fitting right in.
Fantastic stuff.

every dead fan has their favorite period or periods of dead music and the fall of 71 is one of my favorites. there really are many brilliant shows this year and a few are preserved on official releases. the run of shows that includes this cd [ harding theater, san antonio, texas christian u. austin, the pauley pavillion, and a few others] is a tremendous run of shows filled with very special highlights night in and night out. frankly, the shows in december including the boston music hall, felt forum in n.y., the fox theater, hill auditorium, and new years eve at winterland are some of the best shows you will hear from any era and are treasured by 71 fanatics like me. this is a great complete show recorded right in the middle of this special time and chock full of prime dead hits. a special treat is hearing keith loud and clear through out and rather amazing how quickly he became central to the bands sound that helps define this period. the only small downer is much of the very best music here is on the bonus disc [highlights from the night before that includes one of the very best "the other one" jams you will hear] and now, rather hard to acquire ..that said, the sets of music we get are superb and includes shorter numbers like "bertha" "deal" and "jack straw" as well as "casey jones" "cumberland blues" and more workingman's dead style folk/rock favorites. longer jam highlights include "dark star >el paso> dark star" and the NFA> JAM> GDTRFB> NFA which are great versions that capture the energy from this part of 1971 perfectly. if you like the band's 5 man format [with keith] this is flat out one of the best official releases you will find. if you look around a bit you can find much more :: a great 5 star cd that is one big highlight from start to finish.

First off, the setlist for this show is perfect...For a Texas, Grateful Dead show!
This show is a great addition for any fan of early 70's. It's not the best sounding from 1971...But offers a glimpse, of what's to come in '72! Personally, I advise any Deadhead to purchase the entire 'Road Trips' series. And no this show wouldn't be my 1st pick from this era, on the box set. That would go to the show at Yale in 1971...But, I still recommend it for any real Dead fan, like myself. Then again, any Grateful Dead fan (like me,) should purchase the entire 'Road Trips' box set! Seriously, how could you go wrong with 6+ hours of live (remastered) Grateful Dead? 'Road Trips' is a perfect addition to your Grateful Dead library...Plus over 300 songs that span 30 years of Grateful music! Trust me 'Road Trips' will...

this is a great stuff...don't get ripped off. It is available at the official Grateful Dead web site (dead.net) for only $20. They no longer have the bonus disc. I don't know why these vendors are charging so much. Not cool
