I purchased the 1-inch by 17-1/2-inch by 13-1/2-inch auger bit in order to drill holes in tree stumps to apply nitrogenous stump remover.

When I received the product from Amazon, I was taken aback by the heft and size of the bit. It is one thing to see the dimensions and an image on a computer monitor, but another thing entirely to hold the bit in your hands.

The 18W DeWalt cordless 1/2" hammer drill that I owned could drive the bit using the lowest speed setting, but not very well. The performance of the bit was impressive nonetheless. The screw tip grabbed into the surface of the wood and guided the auger blades. Backing out to clear the shavings was necessary every couple inches or less; otherwise the shavings would build up and cause the bit to bind into the stump.

Drilling into hardwood stumps like elm I got the bit stuck a couple times. Freeing the bit required drilling holes near the bit to relieve pressure, a pipe wrench to try to back the bit out, and little oil applied and allowed to penetrate the wood where the auger was stuck.

The DeWalt cordless required frequent rests to cool down and/or to charge a new battery, and thus was unsuitable for the purpose. We tried an 8-amp corded heavy-duty Milwaukee that broke after one small stump. Finally, given the requirement for low-speed and high-torque on this kind of bit, we settled on a DeWalt DV130V 9-am 1/2-inch low-speed drill.

This final drill had a variable speed of 0-550 rpm, which was ideal for the Daredevil auger bit with its max speed of 600 rpm. The side handle on the drill was also a boon, as the torque required to turn this auger gets transferred to the user holding the drill. I have bruises from trying to stabilize the other drills with my knees.

I was looking for a wood drill bit to replace my old Greenlee. The new Greenlee was to expensive, as I don't do much of this work anymore now that I am retired. I looked on Amazon, read a few reviews of some of the bits twisting and other problems. I bought the Bosch because of the name and I have purchased other Bosch products. When I got the bit I was a little disapointed because it was made in CHINA. I went ahead and used it and it performed quite well. Hard, hit a nail and it cut it off. It remained straight and is still working well. Hopefully Bosch monitors the quality and so far I am pleased. It was packaged very well in a plastic storage tube. Amazon delivered it quickly, as usual. I am happy.

This auger bit seems to work as good as other brands I've used, and I use them most work days. Bosch claims 3x life over standard augers, and that will have to wait to be seen, I guess, but the couple I bought are holding up well thus far. It does make a cleaner hole than the Greenlee Naileaters that I've tended to prefer in the past.

I ordered this bit because if seemed to have an extra-thick cross section which would provide extra strength. Unfortunately, this also reduces the clearance for chip removal. When drilling green hemlock it bound-up after just 3 inches and I couldn't even back it out. Another (Irwin) bit with more clearance drilled an 8" hole in one go with no problems - on a modest cordless drill.

I was very satisfied with this bit. I had to dowel some 12 X 12 timber and used 1-1/4 closet pole to do it. I was able to use my daredevil bit in these old timbers with no problem. The bit was very ridged and beefy, and was also aggressive, so I didn't need to put any down pressure on my Milwaukee hole hawg to drill. I have only drilled 20 holes in these timbers so far, but the bit stayed sharp thru-out. I also have to say the price was very good as well, and with the 2 day shipping free with amazon prime it made the value even better. I had looked for this bit locally but couldn't find it at the big-box stores or even the specialty shops. It is a pretty big diameter for a wood auger. I was so impressed I bought several other sizes of dare-devil bits I didn't need yet just because I liked the quality and the price.

I use these bits up to the larger sizes in my Makita XWT01Z Cordless Impact Drill.
This drill, being an impact, does not kick back or have any back torque if the bit should bind up or hit a nail while drilling lumbar.
It just pounds away to drive the bit forward. It's really quite amazing.
The Milwaukee M-18 Impact would be another good choice for driving these bits.
I have resharpened these drill bits after several hundred holes with my angle grinder and they cut like new again.
If you don't have an impact drill you will need a slow, powerful drill, like a Milwaukee Hole Hawg, to drive these bits. But be ready to hang onto the drill if it binds up while drilling.
Definitely not safe if you are drilling while up on a ladder.
Get an impact and you will never look back at the Hole Hawg again.

GREAT BITS EXCEPT THE TIP OF BIT BREAKS OFF AND THEN IT IS TOUGH TO START AFTER THAT. THE TIPS HAVE BROKEN OFF ON OVER 10 OF MY BITS
