I loved a certain cat tree that I could buy from Wally World for $40. It had a strong spring mechanism that kept the tree firmly in place from floor to ceiling. Then with the last one I bought of these, I found they are now being made with lower quality carpeting. The cats tore it up pretty quickly.

So I looked and found this Trixie Santander. I loved that it would also reach the ceiling like the prior ABC cat tree did. And the Trixie had nice sisal wrapped posts for them to scratch on (instead of faux fur) like my other Armarkat tree has.The sisal posts really hold up well. So I decided to give this a try.

It was easy to put together, but structurally it has a lot of cardboard in it; the box is faux fur covered cardboard and so are the sisal covered tubes. The hardware screws to connect the shelves and posts are also not the same heft as the ABC or Armarkat cat trees.

So assembly went along easily until I got to the point of attaching it to the ceiling. It does NOT have the spring loaded foot that provides the resistance against the ceiling and keeps the tree stable. It relies on a threaded rod to be screwed down into the top post and kept at the right level with a wing nut. Then once you lift the tree to the ceiling, you unscrew the threaded rod to force the top padded piece against the ceiling.

The problem is, the tree falls unless it's tight enough to the ceiling. If you make it tighter to keep it from falling, the tree gets a bend in the middle under the pressure. And the pressure also causes the box to misshapen.

I thought I had it set tightly enough to keep it from falling, which it did a few times, but not too tight for it to crush the box. But the next night with just one cat climbing up it quickly, it snapped in half.Read more ›

A lot of people are leaving negative comments & not taking simple measures to make this cat tree stable with L brackets. I love me some L brackets, laws yes! The unit comes with the most rudimentary instructions, if you can call it that & their topper is lame, however if you use L brackets & screw it into the wall, this thing is a BEAST & holds up wonderfully with even our 22 lb monster cat, Choochamongous! We have 2 brothers that are a year & a half old that love to race each other up the tree to see who wins the top platform & they will also launch themselves off the top, doing what we call the Jimmy Snooka flying leap. With a little TLC & inventiveness, the Santander by Trixie is a great, low cost cat tree/tower. The down side to the unit is the supposedly "adjustable" top is awful. The furry thing hides nothing more than a threaded rod with a wood circle. The rod we got was bent & being that our ceilings are just 8 feet high, we were able to discard that top piece & wedge a piece of wood, about 1/2 inch thick, as a sort of shim. If you have the standard 8 foot ceiling, I'd copy what we did & use L brackets on the hidey-hole & platforms/shelves to anchor it so that it will hold up much longer than if you were to rely on that silly rod.

As for looks and quality; It's a great looking cat tree. The problem lies with the top. It does not have a tension rod that suctions to the ceiling for that firm grip. I pushed it into place and my cat ran to jump on it. Well, it moved. Since it scared her, she will not go near it. I have sprinkled cat nip & treats all over it & she still avoids it now=(

This cat tree is AWESOME! I have used the cheaper floor-to-ceiling versions before and the cheap carpeting on the posts is always destroyed by my cats in just a few months. This one costs about twice as much as the one I used to buy, but the posts are covered in twine and its very sturdy. Its also a bit taller and works better with my vaulted ceilings. Huge bargain at this price! Most cat trees I see at the pet stores are double to triple this amount. Very easy to put together, took me about 15 minutes from box to finished. I have 3 cats ages 6, 10 & 11 - (none are declawed) - they love this cat tree and they enjoy sleeping in the cubby too. Highly recommend!

Cheap! You get what you pay for here. It is not carpet and the cats can't grip on to it when they jump and play on it. They didn't use it very often but it still only lasted about 6 months. I came in from outside one day to find the thing in pieces on the floor! Plastic parts that held the tower together were broken. Then I found a blood trail. My Bengal had sliced a back pad pretty deeply on the broken sharp plastic and he was tracking blood throughout the house. Never again. I had a floor to ceiling carpeted one in the past and I wish I would have paid the extra $ for it! It lasted for years.

With disappointment and frustration I have to report that the Santander TRIXIE Pet Products Santander Adjustable Cat Tree House is unsafe. I ordered it because of the shelving height but am disappointed about a number of points:

• As mentioned in most reviews, the top is NOT steady—it is a very weak point in the design. It wobbles and bends and cannot be secured to the ceiling as provided. (fun-fur covered pressboard disc slides on the ceiling and it is not possible to get good pressure with the screw system
• The plush fabric covering the shelves is soft, but has no traction or grip. It's essentially like soft, slippery stuffed animal fur, and my kitty cannot get a grip into it with his claws. (dangerous when climbing, especially descending)
• The shelves are not long enough for the design to be safe. My cat has nearly fallen several times when trying to climb down from one shelf to the next. With the directional positioning of the shelves alternated, there is only a few inches of landing room, and again, that fabric is slippery.
• Height distance between each shelf is too much for my 8lb cat to safely jump given the wobbliness of the assembled unit and the shortness of the platforms. Perhaps a larger cat would have less trouble with the height, but a larger cat would probably knock this thing over.

So, it seemed like the design would be okay if the top part was fixed and if the fabric was changed and if the shelves were about 3" longer. As it is, I sadly can't let my pet use this product, I fear for his safety.
