I used to purchase sumac online, Sadaf brand, that came in 12 small containers. They were wonderful, very fragrant, fresh and tasteful. However, Amazon doesn't carry them any more. So I wanted to give this brand a try.

Received them today, threw them in trash today.

The bags do not have expiration dates written on them and the sumac inside was extremely stale with very pale dark color as opposed to rich maroon.

There is a review in 2010 that says that the sumac they received was very fresh. The sumac I received in 2012 may very well be from the same batch.

Old, horrible, terrible sumac.

Unfortunately the batch of Sumac I received had very little flavor to it at all. I expected it to have it's usual fresh, potent citrus flavor and instead it's mostly bland. I've added more than three times the usual dose to my dishes and I can still barely taste it.

I mixed it with thyme, marjoram and cumin. It made a very good za'atar bread. Also good on the commercial na'an from the supermarket. I also added it to vinaigrette salad dressing for a nice tossed salad.

This is very fresh and good quality sumac. I use it whenever we make persian rice with kabobs. It has a wonderful tang to it and the price is very good. It's hard to run to the international food store just for some herbs so I love purchasing them from amazon because of the convenience factor.
