I wasn't expecting to have to buy thermal compound since my cooler vendor's instructions alluded to "included" compound. Unfortunately, it turns out that they must have meant "included by someone else".

There are a lot of choices for thermal compound, so I did some online research. I learned that for simpler applications (click-fastener coolers and no overclocking), there's really nothing to be gained except cost and difficulty in choosing one of the exotic compounds.

This one is easy to apply and is said to give better heat transfer than the most basic thermal compounds based upon zinc oxide.

The manufacturer's web site has helpful instructions. I found their advice regarding heat-pipe coolers to be useful, but chose not to follow the advice regarding "tinting" of the CPU.

First, I'm pretty convinced that the amount of thermal grease is a more important factor in cooling than the type - you want enough to seal the junction between the sink and the CPU heat plates, but not so much as to make there be a significant layer of grease between them.

That said, after using this grease when upgrading to an i7 from an i3 CPU in my laptop, I started overheating, which, when it approached the thermal design capacity of the processor, caused it to halt the computer. I thought this was just a flawed CPU or inadequately designed cooling (although the laptop specs did say they supported the new processor). But the problem persisted (although to a lesser extent) even after reverting to the old CPU. The only significant thing that was different was the thermal grease. This leads me to conclude that the grease is less effective than the original, gray clay-like Intel grease that came with the computer.

It's worth getting better grease to not have the problems I have.

This product was very easy to use and effective. This was my first time replacing a CPU and using a compound and I found it to be a very simple process when it came time to apply the compound. This product did what I needed it to and came quickly in great condition.

Between this product and the Thermaltake Massive23 LX Laptop Notebook Cooler, I was able to get my GPU temperature down around 15-17 degrees Celsius. Amazing! I had an overheating/throttling problem with games before buying these two products. That problem is now solved.

The company that makes this has good instructions on their web site. Read them. I used the credit card method and it was quite easy to apply on both the CPU and GPU. I strongly recommend this product.

On a final note, I bought this product instead of Arctic Silver 5 mainly because it was slightly lower in price. Additionally, the company states that Alumina is easier to apply and it works well for the type of system I have.

I quite honestly can't find a difference in tempeture from the generic paste that came with the processor, but I don't push the CPU very often.
Also, it works! For 3$ I can't really complain, while I don't see it doing better, its still doing just as good. It also comes with plenty extra should you want to use it on more than one CPU or mess up.

so i spread this on a 2006 ish macbook that would heat up to 69-70 degrees celcius after a few minute on youtube now and would just relax about 65 degrees just with reading online articles NOW after i put this magical paste on it's running cool at 52 degrees celcius and sometimes at 37 when i first open it up after it's sleeping. ITS SUPER GREAT before when i would open my macbook it would idle at about 48 degrees celcius now it's 37 that's a 10 degree difference. and before my fans would barely blow hot air now the fans blow out scorching hot air! that's awesome blossom!

This paste couldn't keep my i7 under mid-50's at idle. Unacceptable. In games, the temps would shoot to 90C+. Bought the Arctic Silver 5 and temps dropped effectively 10 degrees C. Now idles are at mid 40's.

I just replaced my old thermal compound with this and my laptop is running like new since I bought it 3 years ago. Highly recommended. You just need to know how to apply it correctly and the correct amount.
