I bought this item since I had a $35 gift card and figured I could use a battery grip for my Canon 40D.
The grip shipped quickly and I had it within 5 business days which I found reasonable, especially since it shipped internationally.

The grip itself works exactly as you'd expect, holds two battery packs and has an adapter to use 6 AA batteries in a pinch. The AA option obviously doesn't allow nearly as many exposures as using the battery packs. The instruction manual is awful, i agree, but I didn't see any need to use it. The product is very self explanatory.

Texture of the grip I found to be nearly the same as the Canon body texture. It's nothing that's going to throw you off, but perhaps it's a little different.

Fits securely and functions properly (I've used it for about two weeks so far, no hitches).

My only gripe is that there's not really a spot to store your battery door (from the bottom of the camera). That's not a huge deal, just put it in your camera bag, but it could fit in there with a little re-design.

Overall I give this five stars. I've used official Canon grips in the past and this is simply too close in quality and functionality to justify an extra $100 on the name-brand version. Like the other reviewer said, buy this and use the extra hundred toward another lense or a CF card or something.

Pros:
Cheap
Comes with ALL of the functions of the Canon BG-E2 grip
Good locking mechanism
No problems (knock on wood)

Cons:
Terrible instruction Manual
Misfit texture compared to Canon body rubber
Don't know if it has an auto off function
Bad placement for an on-off switch
More difficult to release shutter/move main dial

Further Notes:
I was considering buying one of the Canon BG-E2 or BG-E2N grips. (the BG-E2N is to some extent more water resistant). This is about 3x cheaper. It isn't very noticeable the difference between the two patterns of grip between the camera and grip, but it is there. My camera is still improved in aesthetic appeal though. I much rather spend about $100 toward a new lens rather than a grip.

Experience:
About a year shooting. About 30% of my shots are in vertical format. I've had the grip for about three months. I haven't had an opportunity to bring it out into the rain yet.

Best Uses: Vertical shooting, and especially shooting with a lens that has a tripod foot. This will prevent the camera from weighing down the head of the tripod too much.

When I first found this grip on Amazon, I loved the reviews and the price. It is true - you get what you pay for.
This grip worked great for about two months of very light use. Then on the day of a wedding I was scheduled to be the solo photographer, it started not firing from the grip's shutter button in the middle of wedding party photos. Imagine how many times I had the ringbearer actually behaving and then I had to press the shutter button rapidly to try and catch that smile. It wasn't pretty, and took me a bit to realize that it wasn't the camera but the grip's shutter button that was acting up. Then at the reception as the DJ is calling the lovely couple to the floor for their first dance, the camera dies completely, won't turn on - nothing. Luckily I had my backup and could use it until I figured out that the grip had gone kaput on me. Don't waste your time, money, or anxiety on this grip -get something better.

This is one of the good inexpensive things!

I received a battery grip branded "MeiKe" in an attractive package with the printing:

Multi-Power BATTERY PACK for CANON 30D/40D/50D.
(bar code 6952333000056)
Made In China (made well I might add)

It works just fine on my 20D.
This product is a nice and unexpected pleasure!
All the controls work as expected, the batteries fit inside and do not rattle.
The battery door is secure and the door release is positive and recessed to prevent accidental operation. Both of my stock batteries fit just fine.
The included instruction sheet is in seven languages including English.
The instruction sheet has a special section for 20D and 30D users with respect to storing the camera's battery door inside the grip. It goes adjacent to the column that extends the contacts up into the cavity where the single battery goes in the camera yes, I read the instructions :)
There is a spring-loaded relief in the battery area on the grip for allowing the cord from a tethered battery to exit without hampering the door operation and latch.
The On/Off control only turns-off the buttons and wheel on the grip, it does not remove power from the camera. This is nice as it helps prevent unwanted shots of the inside of your camera bag.
The grip attaches to the tripod mount with a thumbscrew as in the images and is very tight and there is no movement between the camera and the grip.
The plastic is solid but just slightly "off" from the Canon coloring. My camera has seen a lot of use and as such is not bothered by having a slightly different color gizmo attached to it. This difference in color is very very slight.
