The key is to apply it three times a year (spring when the daffodils are blooming, early summer, and fall) and to be diligent about it. If you apply it once, then, no, you're not going to get the best results. Do not, as another reviewer did, apply weed cloth and mulch over it. You're just wasting your money on weed cloth and on the pre-emergent. Weed cloth does not allow the soil to "breathe" properly and by that I mean, exchange oxygen and water as well as possible. Since it is a barrier to both natural decomposition as well as earthworms, it does not allow organic material such as mulch, leaves, and plant debris to get worked into the soil and enrich it.

Back to the Concern Weed Prevention, not only does it work, it is also safe to use around pets, people, and wildlife and will not contaminate bodies of water by run-off. It has the additional benefit of being a mild fertilizer since it also is a natural, slow-release form of nitrogen.

As a pre-emergent herbicide, this product will help to keep certain types of weeds from sprouting. It's not a systemic herbicide, will not kill existing weeds, nor will it prevent weeds from popping back up from intact roots. What it will give you is a natural solution made entirely from a food by-product that won't make you wonder about the safety of your family, pets or even plants.

Since this is not a systemic poison, you will need to start off by removing existing weeds. Since doing so may spread their seeds, this is exactly the type of substance you want on the top layer of your soil when you do so. Apply this and water in as directed, and allow to dry for 2-3 days. An important consideration is that although powdered corn gluten has been reported to work equally well, this is in granulated form, which botanists recommend for ease of application. About the only risk of using this product is a possible sensitivity in those with an allergy to corn gluten, and given the minimum amount of dust (I didn't see any) in a granular formula, that makes the risk pretty low.

Studies have shown that consistent use results in even better efficacy and by the fourth year, weed control should be at its best. Since I can give only anecdotal evidence based on my own yard, I decided to do some research and see what studies by botanists have concluded, and most have consistently found this formula to be effective. In the short term, I'm trying to grow my own dandelions in flowerpots, both treated and untreated with this product. If I have any unexpected findings, I'll amend this review. For now, I'll have to go by studies done by Iowa State University and the University of Minnesota, which found it effective.

Corn Gluten meal - when used properly - WORKS. Plain and simply put. Keep in mind that this stuff is not about "getting rid of weeds" but rather it's a pre-emergent. In other words, it prevents weeds, doesn't kill them off.

The key is to time it properly. I put it down in the middle of March (in New Jersey/Mid Atlantic US) and then again about 60 days later. You can do it again in the fall if you can spare the $$. But to claim that this "doesn't work" like some of the other reviewers here is not really fair or accurate.

You don't have to poison yourself, neighbors, or the planet to have a "green" lawn. Give it try.

To those who say it didn't work to get rid of your existing weeds, of course it didn't. It is NOT designed to. Pre emergent weed control means BEFORE weeds appear, not after they already rear their ugly heads. If you want something to get rid of weeds that already exist, you need to use the 20% Vinegar and spray it on said weeds on a sunny day. They will die within a few hour. What this product is designed to do is to prevent weeds from popping up in your lawn (weeds that do not exist yet). When used in the Spring (before weeds show up, right after the last freeze, as early as possible) and in the early Fall (Aug or Sept) every year, you will definitely see a nice, green lawn with no weeds . I have used it this way for years (using the 20% vinegar for any weeds already in existence) and it works very well. This is an excellent organic method of lawn care. I highly recommend it. I have tried other brands of corn gluten meal products and they did not work at all, so I stick with this tried and true brand. It is well worth the price!

I loved this product. You have to use it right. Apply in the fall to stop weeds in the Spring. Apply it in the Spring to stop weeds in the fall. And apply it in the summer to stop weeds in the fall. It works year round for me on preventing new weeds.

I use this on my back lawn because I have two cats and I don't want them ingesting any chemical weed killer or getting it on their paws and tracking it into the house. I usually apply this in the spring when the dandelions will start multiplying, and it seems to help. You can't expect instant results as with chemical weed killers, but this does seem to help if you use it in spring and fall.

As an organic weed pre-emergent, this is pretty good. It's probably just about as effective as Scott's for preventing dandelions, but it looks like white clover ignores it (maybe even likes it). I have a big patch of white clover growing where I dumped out more of this than I should have.

It spreads easily, and the shaker bag is quite a bright idea for veggie patches, window boxes, and other small gardens where a drop spreader won't really work.

Note that you may need a LOT of this stuff: one 5lb bag only covers about 250 square feet... so you need four bags for every 1000 square feet of garden you have. If you have something of a significant size, Amazon has a 25 lb bag here: CONCERN WEED PREVENTION PLUS - 355027

The one concern that I do have is that I'm not sure that this is legal in some areas of the US that are trying to keep phosphates out of the water: this is an 8-2-4 fertilizer, and some areas require that middle number to be zero. Jonathan Green's Organic Weed Control plus Fertilizer (used to be on Amazon, but can't find it now) is 9-0-0, but doesn't spread so well. Espoma Organic Weed Preventer - 25 lb. CGP25 is 9-1-0, though there's another version that is 9-0-0, but I can't find it on Amazon. From past experience, Espoma spreads quite nicely.
