I learned about these grates last year and asked Santa for one for Christmas. He came through and I installed it Christmas night (install is a bit of an overstatement - SO easy to get set up). I really cannot believe what a huge difference it made in terms of heat output. The heat was the reason I wanted the grate - we often had fires, but the amount of heat they generated was so minimal, the fire was more decorative than useful. Now we have a fire that heats and looks beautiful. I've also noticed a dramatic reduction in the smoke smell in the house when the fire is going. I could not be more pleased with this product.

We bought this primarily to solve a smoke problem. We have a new heat exchanger-type fireplace with glass doors and have always struggled with a lot of smoke. This didn't eliminate it 100% but you do want a little smell when you burn wood. There is less smoke because it burns hotter, and what smoke there is is in the back away from the glass doors. The other big benefits are that it's really easy to start a roaring fire in literally 3 minutes, and maintenance of the fire is far easier. You just throw a log on top and it works its way down as the embers collapse. You rarely need to poke at the logs - just not necessary. We added the RF-4 reflective back to protect our pre-fab "brick" in the back as recommended and the two pieces together are nice and stable. Yes, it's worth the money.

I probably could have gone with this width, but ended up purchasing the S-3, which is 12" × 11" × 11" on the manufacturer's website. With all of the S series, you have the option of making the height 2" shorter. The shorter version is 10" in height, and this shorter version works perfectly in my prefab fireplace. Withe a prefab or heatalator fireplace, you have to use a fire back. The vertical grate puts a lot more heat onto the rear wall of the fireplace. Please follow the manufacturer's recommendation of using the fire back. I just had my fireplace cleaned and checked, November 2015, and the back veneer bricks had cracked from the heat even with the fire back. The chimney inspector said there was no real damage, but over time the brick backing and possibly the prefab liner will require replacement. He was very impressed with whole setup, and hadn't seen a vertical fire grate before.

Bought this for an outdoor chiminea that was custom-built for our small patio. It was the only option that fit the width of the firebox, and as it turns out, it's the perfect fit. I use a stainless steel reflector on the back wall, which ensures the heat is directed into the seating area of the patio, and this stacking grate maximizes the heat production, important for an outdoor entertaining space.

More efficiency to my fireplace has been added with this unique grate. I use less wood, actually half what I was using due to the efficient use of the hot coals. The fires also last longer. I can let it burn down to the coals then add a piece of wood. I no longer have to keep adding wood piece after piece. I am very pleased with this investment.

It is a very interesting design. I would agree that it successfully helps to burn less wood than traditional grates. I also agree that the design is far better than any traditional grate. It does the job, is structurally built, and the fire looks aesthetically pleasing because of the design of the grate. It arrived faster than expected. Is it worth the money however? I think they charge way too much for it despite the benefits. All around though, I give it a solid 4 stars.

Holy frickin' fire is this thing awesome. Buck for buck, this might be one of the best things in my house. A) It makes starting a fire easy as heck. My wife can't light a match, and she can get a fire going with this thing. Newspaper, a few pieces of kindling, a couple small logs and you are on your way. B) The fire looks great. The vertical nature of the fire just plain makes for a more aesthetically-pleasing flame. C) The fire requires no tending. You just throw logs in and they feed themselves to the flames and blazing hot embers. D) Speaking of blazing hot, numerous guests have commented on how my fireplace kicks out the heat so much better now. Buy this grate. You're dumb if you don't.
