This item worked pretty well. It seemed to take the digital signal and turn it to analog just fine without much visual quality loss.

Pros:
- good image quality
- seamless conversion
- simple design
- works great when hdmi is coming from computer (powered hdmi)

Cons:
- does not work when connected to DVD/Blu ray player

The reason it does not work when connect to DVD/Blu ray player is because the HDMI connection on those devices are not designed to provide power as is the case on most HDMI connections on computers. To solve this problem the manufacturer provided a power input (5V DC) on the device. But guess what? That charger does not ship with the device!!!! You have to buy your own and make sure you get one with the right tip. You can go to Radio Shack and spend $25. Or you can try to order one off Amazon for $10 hoping it comes with the right attachment...

So here is my advice... If you are getting this to go from a powered HDMI connection from your laptop to VGA then you will probably love this little box. But if you want this to connect to a non-powered HDMI connection you should purchase a different device or make sure you have a 5V power supply that has the right connection.

I went to Radio Shack and the tip they gave me was called an "M sized" tip. The size specs are 5.5mm outer diameter and 2.1mm inner diameter. Hope this helps somebody.

I have a INFOCUS M1 ceiling mounted projector which has only VGA input capability for inputting 1080i from my new SONY BD series Blu-Ray/Media/Wireless player. The SONY player only has 1 HDMI (1080i) and 1 DV (480i) output.

Little known facts: VGA video is ANALOG, not DIGITAL; Normally, HDMI HD video is DIGITAL

Because of the above little known facts, one needs a D(igital) to A(nalog) converter like this HDMI to VGA converter with R/L Audio Converter in order to make such interconnects work. The confusing part for many is that this converter unit is discribed like a simple gender changer (HDMI to VGA Converter), not the signal conditioner (D to A Converter with HDMI input connector and VGA output connector) that it is. For this reason, many people incorrectly compare this more expensive, but required component, to the inexpensive simple gender changer cable (HDMI to VGA Cable), which hardly ever works!

The isolated case where the gender changer CABLE works is where the (older) HDMI device has analog signal output to a HDMI connector, with the VGA display device also being analog, using a VGA connector. Again, this is very seldom the case these days.

Finally, most video devices with HDMI ins and outs do not supply 5V to the HDMI cable with sufficient power to operate this converter. For this reason, you must purchase a 5V, 1.5A DC power supply seperately to power this device. Amazon has them for six bucks or less.Read more ›

After reading the reviews I was a little on the fence about buying this. No adapter etc... I don't know what the not so good reviews people were doing because I absolutely love this thing!! It DID NOT need a power adapter. The power comes from my chromecast when the chromecast has its adapter plugged in. Furthermore it was completely plug and play. I did nothing to make it work other than switch the input on my projector! Give this a shot it's worth it!

I bought this device after trying multiple cables for hooking my Samsung 3 Chromebook to a serial projector in our local library. This device actually worked. I did learn though that by using a 5V out power supply (not included with the unit) that the cables that had not worked before didn't have a problem getting signal to the serial projector. I wish the product had come with a power supply to insure any cable would work.

I am running a DELL Inspiron 15 laptop and Windows 7. Since DELL replaced the VGA output with an HDMI-out, I needed an adapter to use my external 27" monitor (1920x1080) as an extended desktop.

I originally purchased one of the simple dongle-like HDMI to VGA adapters, but quickly determined its inadequacy for the task. It seems that the DELL HDMI-out does not have the power to drive my external monitor. The monitor would function, but the screen would periodically black out for a second or two, then come back. This becomes pretty tough on your productivity level. I tried lower resolutions, limiting the graphics being displayed, removing the KVM switch -- it simply came down to the converter.

I purchased this powered converter and voila, it works perfectly. No flickering, solid image - works perfectly with my KVM switch.

As a perk, my purchased unit came with the 5v AC adapter - so I didn't need to purchase the separate product (although I did). Oh well, I lost an additional $6.39 - but I'm happy that my external monitor is fully functional!
