I started using bare drives for backup and wanted some protection for them while in storage. This case provides little protection in the event of a drop. It's mostly to keep the drive clean and keep out any static discharge during transportation. The lid is a bit tough to close, as the foam in the lid top is quite stiff. In my case, this product works well as i'm not looking to toss my drives around. I just don't want to put a bare drive in my laptop case, so this does the job. Not the prettiest, not the best quality, but gets the job done at a reasonable price. This is just one of those functional products that you put into a drawer and forget about, until your next data backup.

I ordered 4 of these covers and im about to place another order for 2.
I want to keep my HDDs safe since i do a lot of switching using Thermal Take's Dock.

Please note that this is not a shock resistant cover.
It only keeps your 3.5 HDD drive safe from dust and stuff falling on it.
The HDD fits firmly inside with no movement.
The material is hard see through plastic.
I find my HDDs to be safer in these covers rather than being outside with no protection at all.

The stacking ability is very nice, i managed to stack 4 covers on top of each other on a shelf.
Great product.

The Crest 3.5 inch IDE/SATA HDD Storage Boxes are the way to go!

They come in all kinds of colors so you can organize them accordingly.
Red for Video, Blue for Music, white for Photography, etc...

They stack on top of each other nicely.

The only thing I would recommend since they are made of plastic, is to drop in a little packet of Silica Sand so no humidity can build up in the boxes.

Theses are much better than the Black Plastic ones that look like VHS Cases.

I wanted to like these as an inexpensive storage solution for a stack of old backup drives and I'll reserve final judgement for a little longer yet...

BUT

1 of the 3 I bought broke on the first use. The latch just snapped off when I opened it to remove the drive. The other 2 are ok so far but it feels flimsy and I expect they will not last long either. Good news is I'm not swapping drives that frequently so if you are just storing them you should be ok.

Also, a minor detail but still... my drives are too tight of a fit if I leave the mounting screws in the sides. I'm not mounting the drives today but if I had a need, I'd prefer the screws to be right there on the drive not stored somewhere separate. Unfortunately I found out the hard way that is not practical when I couldn't get a drive out.

I purchased several of these cases to help protect my bare HDDs that I use to backup my computer. I backup to bare drives then put them in these cases and store in a fire proof safe and also store a second set of drives in a safe deposit box at my bank.

The drives fit perfectly in these cases and but they don't offer a lot of shock protection. They do have a little foam piece in the "lid" that presses against the drive when it is closed, but that's about it. I mostly wanted them so I don't have to worry about where I set the drive down or how I grab the drive (to avoid finger grease on the circuit boards or something on my desk scraping against sensitive spots on the drive. It does well for this.

When the item arrived is when I first realized that it holds not one, but two 2.5-inch drives. Then I looked, and sure enough, one of the two product pictures clearly shows two drives in the box. So, that could be a plus or a minus depending on your needs, but at least now you know ahead of time!

The latch on the lid locks very securely, but be careful when opening it; it feels like you could rip it off if you weren't gentle. On the other side of the lid is the hinge...it is basically a very thin strip of plastic and it just looks like it won't last too many opening/closings before it just falls apart. But only time and use will tell, so I will update after I have used it for 6 months or so.

A drive is a 3-dimensional object of course, and the box has extra room above/below the drive as well as side to side (ie, it could hold a slightly larger drive than my Seagate Momentus 500 gb). So when the lid is open, the drive can move around in the case somewhat. But there is a thick piece of fairly hard black foam in the lid of the box that presses the drive very tightly when closed, so the drive does not move around at all unless you shake the box somewhat violently (try not to do that!). There is no foam in the bottom of the box, so it doesn't really provide any significant shock-protection, it just stops it from sliding around in the box. The pressure of the foam against the drive when closed worries me because surely it must stress that already weak-looking hinge.

-1 star for the hinge, it offers little confidence of longevity.

Priced just right to make returning this junk not worth it. They are clearly a too small to fit 3.5" drives, I tried with new Seagate and WD bare drives, the case is too narrow to fit them. Will find something else to do with it.
