I wanted to dye shirts for my kids to wear to Disney World so I can keep track of them. This is the kit I decided on, mainly because of price at the time. The kit ended up being a good choice for a few reasons. One it is cold here. There is a foot of snow on the ground. Tie Dye is something I usually do outside only, but given the conditions I had not much choice. I was not looking forward to the idea of a container of dye and drippy soaking T-shirts, soda ash soaking etc. But this kit you can use with dry shirts. That being said I know that you MUST MUST MUST always pre-wash and dry your shirts before you start. If you do not many times the sizing that keep the shirts looking new and fresh in the store also keeps dye from staying on the shirt.

This is a review for only the red blue and yellow dye on the shirts. The purple and black is another brand of fabric spray paint.
So I started with pre-washed and dried shirts. Did my spraying on the kitchen counter covered with a thick layer of plastic table cloth. The shirt on the right I sprayed in all my twists and folds and tried to saturate as much as I could with the spray bottle. It looks most like traditional spiral tie dye.

The middle I did some light chrunching and spraying, then refolding so white was exposed and spray again. This spray color does not soak too much through folds so only the white parts exposed end up dyed, unless you spray in the folds. You can tell on this middle shirt that there is a look of sprayed dye in spots. It is just a differnt look.

Now as far as 18 shirts? Not likely. Maybe if you did a little design in the middle of 18 shirts. But one of the colors I used, I ended up using the entire bottle on just these three kids shirts, size one extra small, and two size small.Read more ›

This is a really cool product. I mixed together a few of the colors to make green, purple, and pink, giving me a total of 6 colors to play with. If you add a little water to them, the color won't be quite so intense, and you get much more dye out of the pack. The paint dries super fast and after a quick trip in the dryer, you're all done. it was a very clean, very simple, and very fun project.

This is the first time I dye my own garment. I want a pair of canvas shoes in red, yellow, blue and black. But the store only sells the shoes in tan. I read into dying methods, boiling hot water, rubber gloves...those all sound too complicated to me, and I was afraid that I would dye more than just the shoes. Also wasn't shoes if the rubber sole would get dyed as well. Anyway, I went to a craft store and saw the SEI Tie Dye Tumble-Dye. Although the bottles are spray bottles, I read that I could just use them as paint.

So I got them, got home, and use a paint brush to dip into the dye and paint my shoes away. I did the red pair first and the paint was thick enough to cover the original tan color. The yellow came out to be a bit mustard, but I still like them. I ran out of shoes, so I have to get more pairs to do the blue, and I am thinking about purple and black too. Although I don't know how I can do black as I didn't want to mix the dye and it seems that it doesn't come in black dye alone.

Anyway, after I painted the shoes, I let them air dry for a couple of hours, and then I put them in the dryer on high heat for 20 mins as instructed. I like how they come out. I have not wore them in the rain though, so not sure if the color would run. But then who wore canvas shoes in rain, right?

Overall, I give this product a 5 because of the ease of use and the colors are nice.

I will update this review when I actually try it out, but I wanted to just respond to the comments that said that the package claimed to make up to 18 t-shirts, but it really only seemed to make 3 or so.

Well, the set I just received today has the same exact amount of paint and yet it says it makes up to 12 shirts. It looks similar to the packaging shown in the photo, but is different.

Like I said, I will update this review once I have used the product.

UPDATE:
We made 7 adult shirts and 2 kid shirts, and still have plenty of dye left over for more shirts. The colors didn't come out quite as vivid as shown in the photo, but we've washed them and they seem quite colorfast.

We've purchased several SEI tie-dye kits since we tried out the first one and fell in love with them. They are so easy to use. There is no mixing involved. You don't need buckets. You simply tie up your shirts and spray them. The pump is similar to a hair spray pump so it may be a little difficult for younger kids. My 5 yo can do it with a little assistance.
The shirts come out great if you wet them before putting on the rubber bands. LET THEM DRY COMPLETELY before removing the rubber bands. Then you simply throw them in the dryer and they are ready to wear. Even after a few washes the colors are still vibrant.
If you are looking for the quickest, easiest and cleanest method of tie dying I highly recommend this product. I'd suggest using rubber gloves and spraying the shirts on a piece of cardboard and letting them dry there (or in a plastic bag). That way there is little to no clean up. You can make a few shirts (and clean up after them) in just a few minutes.
