I heard about this as "Shapelock" and for whatever reason, the company decided to rename it "Friendly Plastic". "Instamorph" is another name for the same material.

It's Polycaprolactone, Wikipedia has a great entry on it.

The pellets melt in 150F-160F water. This is hot enough to scald you but not cause a serious burn. I was afraid this would mean that kids wouldn't be able to play with it but in fact they can due to the low thermal capacity and conductivity. Within a minute or two of coming out of the hot water bath this stuff cools down enough that it's just warm. However it still remains pliable enough for kids to have a lot of fun.

When it does finally cool completely it's hard and strong. I'm used to Fimo/Sculpey which is really very weak. This stuff is suprisingly strong. Strong enough that I have yet to break a part which was fully cooled. I'd say it's as structural as the plastic in most kid's toys and actually a bit tougher (resistant to cracking) I believe there must be some crystallization going on. I made a device where the plastic acts as a living spring - it flexes with a surprisingly high modulus.

I've made a number of things with it already - a cell phone holder, a shoe horn, a cable organizer, even special hook to hold an IV bag on a light stand.

You don't use much of the material because any pieces you have are easily remelted into your next project. Once something outlives it's usefulness you simply melt it back down.

Recommendations:

1) Stretch out leftover pieces so they're not too solid - this speeds up remelting later on.
2) Get the little container first unless you definitely have something in mind.

It just so happens the most use this product gets is at work for creating splints for toy breed dogs with broken legs. Easy to create a custom-fitted splint for tiny dogs or kittens while awake or sedated.

This has been a lifesaver. Long story short: While having breakfast I lost one of my front teeth and was devastated. Made a dentist appointment, but in the meantime.. After some research, I found this product and made myself a prosthetic tooth. I wish I could show a picture to show how realistic it looks. **Left a picture with other pics of InstaMorph** I am the happiest girl alive at the moment. I can smile without covering my mouth. It is quick, easy and painless to make. Even if you have to make a few before you get one that you like, it's so worth it. And the container that I purchased has enough product to make a lifetime worth of teeth! Well, there's more than enough for a lot of practice, if need be. Can't say enough about this product. *My smile says it all*

InstaMorph has captured my imagination. I am a musician and tech junkie and thought the applications for InstaMorph would allow me to make stands, cases and handles for all my stuff. That it did and does, but it is so much more. I have repaired a cracked interior panel in my Honda Element (saving several hundred dollars). I have securely insulated and spliced two audio cables together without tape, heat shrink or solder. My toothbrush finally has a home. My mixer finally sits at the correct angle on my desk. I've disposed of my envelope/letter holder for something much more efficient and small. The switch that keeps breaking off of my organ is now replaced forever.

If my dad had this when I was a kid my toys would have lasted twice as long.

And it's strong. The thicker you make it the stronger it is (duh). But under stress it doesn't snap; it bends. It's tough. And the 12oz container goes a long way. I'm halfway through mine and I've made a ton of stuff.

This should be as common a household product as duct tape in no time, and in case you didn't read the description, it's reusable.

You need it in ways you can't even comprehend.

InstaMorph is an interesting, if slightly finicky accomplice for all sorts of unexpected uses. The container yields BB-sized balls of mostly opaque white plastic, similar to the appearance of the robot skin in I, Robot. When dropped in a bowl of hot water, they'll turn transparent within fifteen seconds and stick together (and to the bowl). You can then drain the water and prod the resulting soft and sticky mass onto any wet surface to mold.

The plastic doesn't retain enough heat to easily burn, though the risk increases if you're pulling it from boiling water. Molding properties are similar to modeling clay. It's very easy to join and smooth edges with your hands or flatten a piece as if it were cookie dough. You can manipulate the shape for about three minutes until it begins to harden. It'll take another ten minutes to reach final hardness, or you can speed the process by running it under cold water.

Beware: InstaMorph gets extremely tacky once it begins to set. If you're molding it on surface that it's not supposed to stick to (e.g., the batteries under the battery door cover I just made) and you make a mistake, don't attempt to pull it off while it's still partially pliable. You'll just leave a plastic residue that'll be almost impossible to remove later. If you wait until it hardens, it'll come off in one piece and you can start again.

When totally hard, strength is similar to standard, non-specialized toy plastic. It is not at all brittle and will bend under load. While you can cut very thin (under 1/16") sections with scissors, it's almost impossible to tear at any thickness. I created a simple tube about 1" in diameter and 1/8" thick and was able to stand on it with minimal deflection.

You can't weaken the material with handling.
