I did quite a bit of research before purchasing the ZeroWater ZD-023 Dispenser/ Filtration System. After 6 weeks of use, it performs like a champ, and I'm still on the first filter. I'd guess I've filtered something like 30 gallons, and it still reads 000 ppm on the included TDS meter. My water is from a private domestic well, untreated, and meters on average 220 from the tap.

I compared bottled water from the supermarket. Their "spring water" metered at 065, the store "distilled" at 008. Nearby distributed water system treated water metered at 280. A local business imports their water in large jugs, and they allowed me to check it. "Drinking water" metered at 070; reverse osmosis distilled at 002.

Minimum EPA standards are 500 ppm; New Mexico state requires no more than 1000.

So there are some baselines. My ZeroWater system performed very well. The taste is fine.

The most negative review here didn't mention quality of incoming water, so I found it less than helpful.

Pros of the ZeroWater unit:
* A limited-time $15 rebate made the larger unit far cheaper than the pitcher. Plus, nothing on Target's shelves (sorry, Amazon, this time I wanted to actually see and compare products) could match the price.
* Quality of water after filtration, as mentioned.
* A helpful 1-800-503-2939 customer service number. Two of my questions were answered in short order.
* I was told all ZeroWater units take the same filter, so the part interchangeability is a plus.
* Small numbers of filters run about $15 each. A gallon of store distilled runs about 96 cents with tax. With that math, the ZeroWater filter pays for itself at about a 16 gallon breakeven.

ZeroWater is the reigning King of low-cost water filtration devices.
Seeing your water purity go from 150.00 to 250.00 PPM of contaminants, down to literally "0.00" is exciting.
No other affordably-priced water filters can do that. I give it "Five Stars" for quality and affordability.

However, there is a "dirty little secret" that ZeroWater desperately hopes you don't discover:
... how to make their water filters last at least 5 times as long, without sacrificing water purity at all.
I will tell you the secret:

The company makes its money on selling you $10 replacement water filters that only last about 30 to 50 gallons,
and then the water impurity level starts to read more than "0.06" (the company-recommended filter-change interval).
For most couples or small families... that means a new $10 filter about every month.

Wait a minute! You mean that this filter purifies my tap water from over 150.00 PPM down to a negligible 0.06 PPM,
and at that point... while the filter is still operating at OVER 99.9% EFFICIENCY... I'm supposed to discard it,
and buy another of your $10 filters? Because 99.9%+ purity is somehow "unacceptable"? That's crazy perfectionism!

Here is the SECRET to maintaining a purity rating of under 006 PPM for at least 5 times as long as the projected
30 to 50 gallons per filter... to get instead 150 to 250 hundred gallons per filter replacement:

Step One: Buy ZeroWater's big 23-Cup Filter Device (Item # ZD-018) for less than $40 on Amazon.

Step Two: Buy ZeroWater's 10-Cup Pitcher Filter (Item # ZP-010) for less than $30 on Amazon.

Step Three: "THE SECRET CYCLE"...

IF YOU KNOW YOUR WATER CONTAINS A LOT OF MINERALS, YOU MIGHT WANT TO STEER CLEAR OF THE ZEROWATER FILTERING SYSTEMS.
Visit the ZeroWater web site (zerowater.com). There, you can find a map and determine if the water in your area has a high level of TDS. If it does, the ZeroWater system may not work well for you. If your location has water over 250 ppm from the tap, you will probably be disappointed with the ZeroWater systems.

CONSIDER WHY YOU WANT TO FILTER YOUR WATER

WHAT ZEROWATER DOES
ZeroWater's web site states that their systems are designed to reduce principally one kind of substance in water-- dissolved inorganic salts, and chlorine. The ZeroWater system is very effective at reducing measured TDS (total dissolved solids/salts); that is why they provide a sensor device for that kind of substance. ZeroWater filters do also reduce hydrogen sulfide, chromium, lead, and mercury. Keep in mind that ZeroWater also reduces calcium, magnesium and other harmless or beneficial minerals from the water.

If this is what you want and expect, then the ZeroWater system is a convenient alternative to reverse osmosis or other purification systems.

By design, ZeroWater DOES LITTLE to filter organic substances (such as cysts, spores, MTBE, VOC, pharmaceuticals, etc.). It is not designed to do so.

If your concern is to eliminate contaminants, ZeroWater will only remove inorganic ones.

If you really want to know what different filtration systems do, visit the NSF web site (NSF tests certifies water filtration products) at nsf.org/certified/dwtu

CHORINE TASTE
ZeroWater, like almost all water purification systems available, will reduce chlorine smell and taste. It does a fine job at that.
