I typically don't write many reviews, but I like Amazon. We are very happy with this fan. Last spring I bought a couple Hampton Bay 52" fans and they are great. This fan is very attractive, and the best part is that it very, very quiet. We got it for our new bedroom we built. My biggest concern was noise. If I hear a fan making constant humm on low, I would never sleep. We are very happy so far. It has been up and used regularly for nearly a month. Cons: the pulls for the light and fan (separate) are kinda cheap looking (picture of a fan and light respectively). I had read a review prior to my purchase that the fan "rocks" too much when you pull a chain. This just isn't the case with ours. It sounds like their fan may not be properly seated in the hanging bracket. I would highly recommend this fan.

This fan looks great and I was hoping that it would be a great buy judging by the past 4 reviews all being 5 stars.

But after installing this fan just now, the High speed has a lot of motor noise, like wah wah wah wah, medium and low speeds are barely audible, but high is way too loud. The previous $20 fan installed didn't make that much noise except for being very unbalanced and the one in my living room that is 13+ years old doesn't sound like that either, and the cheap walmart one my roommate has in his room doesn't even make motor noise.

I'm thinking I must have gotten a defective unit, so I'm gonna return this one and get another to see if there is a difference or not. I'll update the review once I get the new one.

Edit: Didn't even notice it before but when ever I turn on the lights when it's on medium it makes even more motor noise. That leads me to believe something is definitely wrong with the unit I received.

UPDATE 5/7/10: Just installed the new unit and I couldn't be happier, on high this makes minimal motor noise. This may be due to me having this flush mounted to the ceiling giving the motor nothing to damper vibrations between it and the ceiling, but I don't sleep with this on high so I don't see it being a problem. Medium and Low are silent, no noise at all.

So now with the new fan working properly I give this fan 5 stars!

I ordered this fan about half a year ago into a new apartment. It's a wonderful model, and with a sleek contemporary design, it fits perfectly. I really love how it looks. It's compatible with a dimmer, I installed the fan using light wood color blades which look fantastic. It takes two bulbs, which is plenty. Ultra quiet. Very happy, no problems.

Update in 2016: 10 years after purchase. The original fan is still going strong. I bought a second one to match about 5 years ago. Love them! No issues, they both spin 24/7, I never turn them off as I have a huge living room and love a slight breeze. There is a reverse switch I use every half year. Counter clockwise for summer.

Ultra quiet, even when both are on 2nd medium speed - cannot hear them.

I bought this fan for my bedroom to replace the heinous fan that came with the house. The look of it was perfect, so I ordered it. It came in no time thanks to Amazon prime and I got it installed without any issues.

However, I turned the fan on and it made this horrible clanking sound! What I discovered was the the top part above the blades was warped relative to the bottom part with the light. This caused the blades to rub and clank as they spun through the warped area. A quick chat to Amazon had a new one sent out and to me a few days later.

I got the new one installed no problem. Turned the fan on it was dead silent! Hooray I thought. Unfortunately, that was not the end of it. The blades on the new one were horribly out of balance. The fan wobbled worse than even the oldest rickety fan. I took down the blades and weighed them and two were several ounces heavier than the others. A balance kit wasn't going to fix this. After the second debacle, I decided not to try a third and went on to a different model.

I should also add that the lighting with this fan is pretty poor. So something to consider. For me, it wasn't an issue as I use lamps mostly to illuminate my room. So that wasn't negative for me. But could be for others, especially if you're used to a light with 4 bulbs.

This fan looks absolutely fantastic on the ceiling, but the quality control issues force me to not recommend it and look elsewhere. Which is unfortunate. If you get this fan and get one that is not so poorly made, then I am sure it will be fantastic for you. The problem is that the odds are pretty good you will get a poorly made one (or two!) like I did. Zero stars for quality, 4 stars for how it looks means I'm giving it 2 stars.

After taking weeks to decide which fan to buy going by aesthetics, it didn't occur to me I was overlooking something equally important. Noise. Maybe I should have bought a different westinghouse fan with the "Whisper quiet, high performance 153-mm by 17-mm motor" as another fan is advertised.
Everything Matt OK said was true for me. Easy to install... etc.
I have mine installed in a newly renovated house, with brand new electrical. The ceiling fan box was wired specifically for this, 2 circuits to connect the fan and light on wall switches with dimming. The thing works fine in every respect except, this loud humming from the motor at every speed. With noise and activity going, you can't really hear it. When its quiet, the fan is the loudest thing in the house, literally hearing it in an adjacent room.
I might have to start again.
