Understand this review is based on the INSTRUCTIONS provided and not the finished beer, which is still in fermentation at this writing. I can't believe there are as many 5 star reviews from first time brewers as there are. If I were a first time brewer and had these instructions to go by, I'd be lost. I've been brewing for a few years and have made around a dozen 5G batches in that time frame. I received this kit along with the Oktoberfest from True Brew as gifts from friends. The instructions speak in generalities instead of being a true recipe, which is critical for first time brewers.

They say bring the initial steeping water to a boil and toss the bag in for 20-30 minutes, when every other recipe I've read either online, in one of the many books I have, or even in my initial brewing class said to bring the water to 150-155 degrees and steep the grains for 30 minutes at that temp. Most even say to remove the grains immediately if it gets above 170 until the water is cooled down so you don't burn the grains and create off tastes. These instructions are advising to toss them in at 205+ water and steep, well, however long you feel like it... 20... 30 minutes... whatever. 10 minutes of steeping and releasing the flavors in those grains is a lot! You're offering that you can cut the time by a third and still have the same tasting beer??

Next, they do a terrible job at describing when to add the hops. I don't recall whether it was this or the Oktoberfest, but they didn't specifically say "the hops used are aroma hops and therefore should only be added at the 45 minute mark of the boil for 15 minutes." The instructions were generic as if they were describing the process of making ANY ale, lager, porter, whatever.Read more ›

This was a great beer and easy to make. I was looking for something similar to a Newcastle and this fit the bill pretty close, though I have to say it has a much stronger flavour than Newcastle, somewhere half way between Newcastle and Guiness. Still damn fine beer.

The only reason this doesn't get the full five stars is because the instructions included with the kit are SO poor. It was my first attempt at brewing and I could have used some more detailed directions - such as when to add the brown sugar.

With that said though, this beer is delicious! It turned out great and with a 5.25% ABV.

Like others, this was first time brewing for me - don't know why the heck I've waited so long. 2 weeks in primary, 4 weeks in secondary,3 weeks in bottles before tasting. This was more time than necessary but final product was excellent! A little darker and not quite as much body as Newcastle, but pretty close. Instructions are pretty generic so you may want to read up and plan ahead if first time. I will most likely get this again sometime since shipping costs are outrageous for me. This was a good price and free shipping with Prime.

I just opened this nut brown after 1 week in the primary, 1 week in the secondary, and only 2 weeks in the bottle. The flavors are already deep and complex, I get chocolate, toasted nuts, and just a hint of coffee(I don't even like coffee). Very simple to brew,and it comes with great easy to follow instructions. I would brew this one again.

As many reviewers here have stated, the instructions are vague at best. If you have brewed before, and you know the routine, then you can fill in the gaps yourself. If you are a beginner, please do some research first. With that being said, the nut brown ale came out great. 5 days of primary, 1 week of secondary then to the keg for carbonation and a few more days of aging. This beer only got better as it aged, so I would suggest at least 2 weeks in secondary. I will be buying this kit again, just because it's easier to get it through prime than to go buy ingredients from the homebrew store and make it myself.
4 stars only due to the instructions, which I didn't go by, but read while I was steeping the grains.

As most of us that drink home brews know, each time you make it, it taste different. To me, Nut Brown Ale is by far the best True Brew there is out there and all that I have made came out great. Arrived on time and as always, taste great when made properly. The direction are all there and very easy to follow. If you are looking for a great starter kit and taste (not the best in the world) then this is the kit for you. Depending on where you are from, you will get a good deal on this from buying it on Amazon then at your local brewer stores. I would highly recommend this to a friend.
