There are 2-3 variations on this device (webbing stretcher). Until I figured-out that I was using it incorrectly, I wished that I had ordered the "paint-roller-type" design (i.e., with a handle that attaches at a right angle). Now that I grasp (pun unintentional) the correct way to position/use the device, I believe that it's no better or worse than the more expensive "paint-roller-type." This other type, however, is likely more intuitive. If you're using a hammer (i.e., not a pneumatic stapler), go for the paint-roller-type. Otherwise, this is just fine. It's inexpensive and well-constructed. FYI: the base (with the rubber bit) should be close to the webbing. You'll push it down (it's a lever), causing the webbing to "crease" against the wood. If it came with instructions, it would get 5/5 stars. Figuring this out took a bit (and I didn't find any help via web searches; you're welcome!).

This is a must have tool if you are reinstalling webbing. It only takes a couple of minutes to figure out how to place it to achieve the correct amount of stretch. Almost didn't purchase this tool as I thought I could stretch the webbing by hand. I tried not using the Stretching tool and stretching by hand and had way too much flex left in the web. Then tried the Stretch tool and was amazed at the difference. Without the tool it is a 2 person job to stretch and fasten, with the tool 1 person can stretch, hold and fasten. Well worth the price. Saves time and frustration. I am a believer!! I agree with 'chickenhead's review - "Without this item it would be nearly impossible to install the straps."

This tool only lasted me through one project. One of the spikes got loose and made a crater in the handle wood which is too soft. The rubber on the opposite end was stapled with thin metal staples, it ripped and turned to mush after a few lengths of webbing

We needed to reweb a single chair, and all the places I contacted, if they would do it at all, wanted near $100 for it. Outrageous!

So my wife told me to do it myself. I refused, as I knew how hard it is to stretch the webbing tight enough to make it comfortable. She won as usual :-)

So I found this tool. It really works. I had never used anything like this before, but within a couple minutes I could easily stretch it exactly how I wanted. It's also really neat to see such a simple tool -- just prongs on one end and rounded rubber on the other -- work so well.

The rubber gripper on the bottom is stapled on. By the time I finished fixing up my sofa, four of the staples had torn through the rubber. Nevertheless, I bought another one for my next project, since I haven't found anything better yet.

By the way, be very careful. The spikes are much sharper than you might imagine.

Perfect companion to the webbing we bought to re-do our chairs.

The instructions were too simplistic, though. The proper angle of use when you start depends on what length of webbing you need stretched--it would be very different going from end to end on a sofa than the same direction on a chair. We learned the hard way, with too sharp an angle which popped the industrial staples, one of which hit my face.

For a chair, start with an angle between 30 and 45 degrees from horizontal. If 45 is too difficult to stretch the webbing, the angle is too great.

I can't actually 'rate' it accurately because I decided to have my chair upholstered instead of doing it myself. But I've seen them before and know they are a 'must have' for those who wish to reupholster antique chairs that have webbing on the bottom instead of springs because if you don't stretch the webbing tight, it'll sag in no time at all.

I loved the simplicity of this tool in stretch the material I needed to tighten my chairs. They will now last another 100 years
