For an item that did not cost me very much money, it is one of the most AMAZING things I've ever bought. As a tank vacuum it works beautifully. Need to do a water exchange on your tank? Just a couple squeezes and you can quickly siphon out however much water that you want. Totally cleaning your tank out? This siphon will get all but about a half tablespoon of the water out. Take a wash cloth, wipe out your tank, and your done! Literally in only a couple of minutes (for 10 gallon tank) from start to finish. I could not be happier. I recommend it to all fish enthusiasts. One thing I do have that makes it even easier is a plastic 6-gallon water jug; I put the hose in it, fill it to where it's still easy for me to carry, and dump it.

We have a 20 gal freshwater aquarium and this vacuum is perfect.

It did take me a few times to figure out how to really use it best:

We use a 5 gal bucket from Home Depot (the big orange ones). Get the vacuum siphoning with a few pumps (which works VERY well) and put the head of the vacuum against the gravel. The mistake I made at first was just grazing the gravel in a continuous motion. The best way is to use the vacuum is to lightly press it into one spot of the gravel, pump it once, let it mix up the gravel and all kinds of crap will come up and suck out. Don't lift the vacuum off the gravel until all the yucky stuff is going up the tube. Then move over a few inches and repeat.

This process takes around 1/4 of the water out for us, which is perfect. We dump it down the sink, fill up the bucket to the top with fresh tap water and done! We do this every 2 weeks and our aquarium has been perfect for 8 months! We've tested the water a few times and it's always been perfect.

**A must to have when you do your bi-weekly water change.

I was afraid of it sucking up my smaller fish, but it is not powerful enough to do this, however if I had, it has an in line basket so any larger particles do not pass through into the waste water. You would not believe how much "crud" settles into the bottom with the stones in your tank. The uptake head is oval in shape instead of round, so you cover twice the area in the same amount of time as the round one.

The siphon "pump" built inline works like a champ! Just a couple or 3 pumps and you've got siphon!!!

If you decide to purchase this, just be aware that when you are finished with each use, you need to take it apart and clean it, especially that in line filter basket of any large matter (like dead plant matter) do not let it sit uncleaned between uses as you may find that it will stink. It probably explains this in the directions, but with such a simple-use item, who bothers to read instructions??? (my bad)

Why oh why do local fish stores not carry these? The pump action to start the siphon is far, far superior to the vacuums that require you to move the entire nozzle, which is inexplicably so popular. This is very easy to start for water changes and far less stressful on the fish, not to mention my sanity. I will never go back to the other kind again.

It arrived today, and I am pleased to say I was able to use it right away. The pump squeeze thing works PERFECT! The last time I had an aquarium was in the early 90's and I remember having to suck the end of the hose to get the water to siphon out. Bleh. It seemed to get my gravel nice and clean.

I love this vacuum! It works great to clean out my tank. I didn't even think my tank was dirty until i used this and got to see all the grossness. I have a jack dempsey cichlid and he makes quite a mess! This product is great and came on time!

I have three tanks to take care of; two five gallon tanks, both with a male betta splendens housed in them, and a 29 gallon community tank with a small school of neon tetras, a couple zebra danios, a pair of female bettas, a cory, a snail and a pleco. After a nitrate spike in the 29 gallon post addition of new plants (which disturbed the substrate and released all that nitrate under the gravel), I got this neat little thing. The hose is sufficiently long, and the pump is really nice, just a couple pumps and it goes on its own. Heavier things like larger fish flakes and such might be something you need to scoop out with a net, the siphon isn't quite strong enough to pull those up and I've yet to figure out how to change the water flow. Beware, you should get a very large bucket for this, it pulls the water out very quickly. Before I knew it my 3 gallon water jug overflowed and sent water all over the floor! This is a very good way to get water out easily though for water changes. The flow isn't strong enough to suck up gravel or fish, and a gentle little nudge on the side and the fishes move out of the way readily enough anyway. I love how easy this is to use, and you should clean it out after each use as another reviewer said. Fairly inexpensive and it does its job well. Happy me.
