As John Lee Hooker sang, "the blues is a healer; it healed me, it can heal you."
In the current living generation of Blues guitarists, Ronnie Earl is one of those standout players who is such a master of tone, touch, and taste that he truly is a healer.

With the Broadcasters, featuring David Limina on keyboards, Lorne Endress on drums, and Jim Moradian on bass, Ronnie's newest release "Spread the Love" is an all-instrumental CD that blends his deep traditional Blues roots with some new directions including beautifully rendered "Skyman", a gentle melodic tribute to Duane Allman, and Lorne's surprising entry, "Patience," which I found myself going back to repeatedly for it's emotional lead guitar layered onto beautifully haunting chord structure. There's that core Ronnie Earl tone, including nods to Albert Collins on opener "Backstroke," Otis Spann on "Spann's Groove" where exceptional honkey tonk piano work by Dave is highlighted, a straight acoustic blues, and a Stratocaster with standup bass- alone blues.
This release, absent his usual terrific selection of vocalists, exhibits Ronnie's brilliance and depth as a guitar virtuoso, intuitively backed by the best band in the business.

I'll go out on a limb and say that "Skyman" shares an ethereal ranking with my short list of alltime best melodic guitar instrumentals with Santana's "Europa", Derek Trucks' "SoClose, So Far Away" and Larry Carlton's rendering of "Sleepwalk."

You NEED the positive energy that comprises Ronnie's newest CD, as he is truly "Spreading the Love," one song at a time. Keep 'em coming, and God bless you Ronnie!

I've been a Mr. Earl fan for a long time now. I own I think, everything he has done, including the Roomful of Blues CD's he was on, way back. With Hope Radio, while a good CD for sure, I had begun to think maybe Ronnie was running out of stuff... WRRRRONG. Spread the Love hasn't left my CD player since I received it several days ago. This one is just as good as Blues and Ballads, if not better. This CD is very deep and spiritual Blues, it breathes with the essence of the redemption the man is feeling inside. Way good stuff. If you are a fan, this is a must own, even at full price, if not a fan, Spread the Love may very well make you one, I really envy brand new Ronnie Earl fans, they have so much good Blues to discover. Ronnie, don't ever quit.

Don't know how I bumped into this guy's stuff, probably searching for 'blues artists'. Ronnie's now my all-time favorite blues artist. I started with 3 of his cds, now I have 9 - Blues Guitar Virtuoso, Colour of Love, Grateful Heart, Healing Time, Hope Radio, Feel Like Goin' On, Language of the Soul, Spread the Love, Still River. I can't really pick any one favorite of these 9, I love them all and highly recommend them all. All these cds are solely instrumental (guitar, bass, drums, hammond b3 organ/piano) - no singing (except 2 of the cds each have 1 song with vocals).

I'd call Earl a blues guy with some jazz mixed in. He can play soft/mellow songs as well as hard driving guitar blues. Grateful Heart would be the mellowist of the 9.

Just so you can get an idea of some of my other favorite blues cds (so you can tell if we might have similar tastes):
Albert Collins - Ice Pickin', Frostbite
Son Seals - Son Seals Blues Band, Midnight Son, Live & Burning
Fenton Robinson - Somebody Loan Me a Dime
Otis Rush - Right Place, Wrong Time
Robert Cray - Strong Persuader
Luther Allison - Bad News is Coming

Ronnie followed Duke Robillard in 'Roomful of Blues' (a jump blues band) and I've now gone back and purchased 3 'Roomful of Blues' cds (only 1 of which Ronnie played on).
I also recently purchased The Duke Meets The Earl - where Duke and Ronnie play together. 4 more fantastic cds!

There are many hot blues guitar "shredders" out there and most of them, young and old, are really good. I believe however that few can match the sweet and tasty string bending that Ronnie Earl exhibits on this album. No one hundred mile a minute fret board running here. Just wonderfully soulful instrumental tracks that pay dues and at the same time sound fresh. Great back up band, particularly Dave Limina on keyboards. This is best blues cd I have purchased this year.

There are simply not enough superlatives to describe how Ronnie Earl makes music. I once heard blues players described and generally categorized: some know their alphabet; others know how to spell correctly. Some players even possess a deep vocabulary - only a few, however, can weave a story with that vocabulary, and tell that story in such a compelling manner. This is sophisticated, and DEEP, blues, and at the same time absolutely *immediate*. I own dozens of Ronnie Earl CDs - and this one is singular - and his back catalog is so extensive that to call this disc a "masterpiece" seems way too belated and wholly insufficient. Every tune has something unique to say - and eloquence and power coexist perfectly on this offering. Arrangements and production values are similarly outstanding - this has become an instant top-of-the-list disc for me.

Don't hesitate - this is one disc that you will be VERY glad to own.
