I bought this sharpener because my old one made a horrible squealing noise. I'm a librarian but we have study hall in this library, so I had to find a good sharpener.
This one is not super quiet, but it works SO fast that it doesn't create a big disturbance.
I even had one junior-high student (stinker!) try to put in a pencil the wrong way, and it still works!
I would recommend this sharpener to anyone who uses standard pencils. (It does not adjust for wider, early childhood-type pencils.)

I love this pencil sharpener. It gives a sharp point and quickly shrpens new pencils. It does need to be emptied often but no a problem. It has survived classroom use better then any electric sharpener I've ever had. I even bought a second one for my house it works so well!

We purchased this same pencil sharpener over 10 years ago. After 5 kids and much abuse, we purchased this as a replacement. . It is a great product. I highly recommend this sharpener for all.

My 4th grade class had gone through about 6 pencil sharpeners this year, all supposedly heavy duty, purchased through an office supplies chain. With plastic grinding rotors, they were easy to abuse, and faster to fail. This does the work of at least three. It is quieter, takes less time to sharpen and doesn't overheat quickly. It stops grinding the pencil tip when sharpened, even in the hands of 'helpful' ram-that-pencil-home type students. They haven't hurt it with heavy usage. I had to make sure they knew how to take the pencil shavings drawer out and put back in, but that's minor. Less mess, only mess comes if they fill the shavings past the fill line and that is again, very minor. Another teacher plans to buy several for her class, and I suspect more will opt to buy this rather than go through sharpener after sharpener that fails. Highly recommend.

I read the reviews to this item and it seemed like a good sharpener. I must have sharpened more than 20 different pencils and colored pencils for my daughter after receiving this last week and on EVERY SINGLE ONE one side is sharpened way too far down and the other side leaves the wood up so that that pigment/graphite is not exposed enough to properly use the pencil. I just printed out my return label. I will be returning this item and purchasing a pricier Bostitch sharpener. I was trying to save money by purchasing this one, but I guess I need to spend more.

I don't like giving bad ratings for products, but given our experience with this sharpener and despite all the positive reviews, I'm a little disappointed in this product and feel the need to share. I was looking forward to using it after reading that it would be relatively quiet, easy to use, and could cleanly and evenly sharpen a pencil. Unfortunately, this sharpener was none of those. It was loud and squealed with use, required a substantial amount of force to operate, and all of my pencils came out with unevenly sharpened tips. I even tried to angle the pencils on the unevenly cut side to see if I could get a straight cut, but that just ended up making the other side uneven.

Now, perhaps I received one that was defective and this is not the experience of most. If that's the case, then this is a quality control issue that the company needs to deal with.

Update:
I contacted the seller to do a return of the product. They were happy to oblige and did a refund within 24 hours. (This review was not a factor as it had not yet posted.)

I bought this item because of the great reviews. It worked very well for a month until it broke. There is nothing jammed in there and the container is empty. I'm a teacher and I am very upset that I have to spend my own money on another pencil sharpener. Very disappointed.

The School Smart Vertical Pencil Sharpener works well and quickly (just a few seconds) to sharpen dull pencils, brand new, unsharpened ones, and colored pencils. The points come out sharp, and do not break with normal writing pressure. The price was also reasonable, especially with free shipping from Amazon! I replaced a different sharpener, purchased about two years ago at an office supply or department store, with this one.

Some other reviewers complained about the shavings receptacle, but that has not been a problem for my family. The couple of times we've emptied the shavings, we did it over the garbage can, and there were no spills or messes.

The only issue I have with the School Smart sharpener (and the reason for rating it four out of five stars)is that the motor is a bit loud and can be startling.

We've been happy with the School Smart sharpener after *one month* of using it just about every day. I homeschool my children; we use and sharpen pencils frequently, and need this to be a reliable tool. So far, it has been performing well . . .
