The Patek Philippe of analogue vernier caliper

I enjoy every moment using this tool. And I'm not gonna let my son use it until he's old enough to know how to appreciate and take care of the real good things in life.

Can I get the job done with a cheaper one? I have a $2 plastic vernier caliper which measures with an extra 0.15% error. You get the picture.

Pricey? Worth the money? There's prius and there's S-class. There's Casio and there's Patek Philippe. Each exists in its own right. Honestly it beats me why Mitutoyo is still making these. It should only make financial sense if they discontinued them. They have my respect.

Disappointed

I've always heard Mitutoyo made the best vernier calipers. I recently purchased an iGauge digital caliper for $30. I also purchased a 6" vernier caliper about 4 years ago for $25.00. Both have a smoother feel. Both came in nice foam lined plastic cases.

Sadly (while I know this unit is far from the top of their line) this caliper has a grittiness to the slide and came in a pretty much useless plastic sleeve. Functionally it is fine, but I am very disappointed in the quality, since the other two calipers I own slide more smoothly and came with nice protective cases.

I'll be keeping this because I'm leaving on a business trip to China and I needed an 8" vernier caliper. However I'm not a happy camper.

Nice Caliper but did not come with Certificate of Inspection

The calipers are great but it was delivered without the certificate of inspection. This is the only reason I gave it a low score. Other than that I would have give it 5 stars. Certitificate of inspection is sold with every Mitutoyo measuring instrument I have ever purchased and this makes me wonder if this is a legit product.

The secret ingredient is love.

I'm a dork, and I appreciate mechanical precision, so you may not care as much about what is essentially a $60 ruler as I do. That said, when you hold this in your hands, you immediately realize that someone put a lot of thought and care into this design. It is rock solid. There is no rattle, there is no shake, there is no give. Do I really need to know how many 20ths of a millimeter thick something is? Very, very, very rarely. Does it make me happy to know that this thing exists that can give me consistent, precise readings without requiring a battery? Absolutely. My only complaint is that the model I bought doesn't have a thumb wheel for fine adjustments, but that was my fault for not choosing one that had that feature.

Yes, the Chinese digital calipers you can buy for half this price are smooth and easy to use. Now take the battery out of it and use it to try to measure something. What's that you say? It's hard to read? You wish you had something analog that you could read quickly and easily without having to deal with batteries? You've come to the right place.

TL;DR: If you're reading this review you're probably shopping for a vernier caliper. If you care enough about accurate measurements to buy a vernier caliper, you should buy this one.

Fine Instrument - Cheap flimsy plastic cover and cheap box.

This is a fine instrument to hold and to use. Easy to read. No batteries. Now I plan to build a wooden box to keep it in or some other protective box. I can't believe they would send it in such a cheap packaging. I got ripped off on the price. I paid $94. Now I see it on Amazon for $55. Maybe the cheaper one is a fake. I have no clue.

excellent caliper. The only issue with it is that I am finding it difficult to read it because of my eyes are getting older (not the calipers's fault). Hence the 5 star rating for this product, but as far as I am concerned, I am purchasing a digital one with this one sitting in the drawer as a backup
