I've used a 110v "Superwinch" for about 15 years to raise and lower our 17' skiboat (via marine blocks with a 4:1 purchase and 1/4" halyard line instead of the wire cable). It has been reliable for all these years, but it had one major issue: the grinding noise of the planetary gearset was enough to make the user want to wear earplugs. I actually planned my boat lifting and lowering to times when neighbors weren't outside.

I purchased this Warn winch two weeks ago and installed it last week. Some observations:

(1) This winch is MUCH quieter. It's still above a whisper, but not at all obnoxious.

(2) It is slightly slower, so it takes maybe 40 seconds to raise the boat, compared to 30 seconds for the old winch.

(3) The gear reduction is greater, so the winch does not try to freespin backwards under load as the old winch usually did.

The one nice thing about the old winch was that it had a metal control box that could be mounted to a wall or post. By comparing the wiring diagrams of the two products I was able to re-use the old control with the new winch. Don't try this if you don't know what you're doing.

I went with this winch because of the WARN name brand. I use it about 8 times to lift not even a 500lb load and it did just fine, then the built in 6A circuit breaker popped. I reset it and it would pop again if I tried to run the winch. I let the winch cool down and tried again, then pop and flash. As a Technician by trade I decided to unplugged the winch and took the electrical housing apart. The crappy little Chinese bridge rectifier was bad according to a multi meter and was board is was mounted to was burnt . The wiring and circuit breaker was also low quality. I installed my own 50amp bridge rectifier, better quality circuit breaker and rewired it. Know it works again. I use it to lift a HG52 crank up tower.

Very surprised to find out this WARN AC winch is made in China. Black finish OK but yellow control looks cheap and has loose butons for in and out function. Would lean towards Superwinch unit at higher price next time.

The winch works as advertised. However. it tangles occasionally when rewinding. Keeping some tension on cable helps avoid this issue. We use the winch to assist transferring my invalid husband from his wheelchair to bed.

I used this for a custom built cargo elevator in my garage. It has been dependable, but I dont think itll pull anywhere near 1000 pounds. Maybe 500 max, unless your using it for 4 seconds at a time. Otherwise it will overheat and trip the overload button. I realize the rating is probably for pulling rather than lifting, but There shouldnt be that much of a discrepancy in my opinion. If your using it to lift or pull 200 or 300 pounds regularly, then itll do fine.

For the cost I believe this is a great winch. I purchased it to pull a "Roll-A-Dock" out of a lake and up a steep hill. It worked perfect. My wife runs the winch and I can keep an I on the dock. I like the fact that the winch pendant has an in and out button. We'll also use the winch to put the dock in so the out button will be very useful. Previously I had a 12 volt winch. The 120 volt is alot more convenient. The 12 volt also had a hand crank you had to use to let the cable out. It only pulled the load. My only recommendation would be to purchase a pair of heavy leather gloves to guide the cable. Since there isn't a guide to move the cable back and forth as it goes on the drum using your hand covered with a leather glove works fine and allows the cable to wind up on the drum more uniform. I would purchase this winch again.

This is a great little AC winch! I use it for raising and lowering my 60' ham radio antenna tower. I had to extend the remote control cable a bit, but that's only because I want to be out from under the tower when it's in motion. The winch works great for loading things into the back of my pickup, also (e.g., 5th wheel hitch, 50 gal fuel tank, 7kW generator)and I even used it to pull my garden shed & contents to the other side of my driveway.

We have a 16ft boat with a heavy motor on it. We use this to back up the boat into our drive way up hill. We bought this with the portable anchor plate, and it works awesome every time. The only difficult part is sometimes the line builds up in one spot instead of spreading evenly over the actual product. So we have to stop, let out line, readjust it and continue on. It works great for what we needed it for!
