This dvd is a true homage to the man born Johnny Allen Hendrix, whose father, upon returning home from WWII, legally changed his firstborn son's name to James Marshall Hendrix, who was called Buster by his family, and who was known to all the world as Jimi Hendrix. What makes this homage dvd so great are all the stories from all the really great people who actually knew Jimi during his short life.

The dvd begins in 1966 with Jimi Hendrix in England, where he first drew the attention of the world on himself with his first hit single, HEY JOE. It was here in London that a mere 3 people- Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970) on his fender stratocaster, Noel Redding (1945-2003) on bass and Mitch Mitchell (1946-2008) on drums filled the world with a new sound that blew us all away back then.

After the dvd tells us stories of the great music of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, it then turns back the clock to the beginning of Jimi's life in Seattle, Washington. This is where Jimi's poverty and broken family life began, with a father named James Allen (Al) Hendrix in the service in WWII and a 17 year old mother named Lucille Jeter Hendrix alone in the States who named the baby after her old boyfriend Johnny and husband Allen. She was alone when she gave birth to baby Johnny the day after Thanksgiving on November 27, 1942. When Jimi's father came home after the war in 1945, he immediately changed 3 year old Johnny's name to James Marshall Hendrix, after himself and his brother Marshall. Johnny was now Jimmy and in the confusion, little Jimmy changed his own name to Buster, after Buster Crabbe, whom he loved from The Flash Gordon Films he saw at the local theatre.

Boy Howdy! This is an interesting DVD, going places that the 'official' biographies won't touch with a ten foot pole. Definitely lacking in music, with either third party tunes or grinding noise, but making up for it by focusing on two things: Jimi's influence as a monster guitarist and the more controversial aspects of his life. It's not all sex drugs and rock & roll, as Jimi's brother Leon gets extensive coverage (he is on the outs with the Family but gets his say here, worth the price to hear him alone) in both the main feature and in the bonus interviews.

Eric Burdon, who made the claims of suicide at the death scene, gets to defend his view, which is also fascinating. Additionally, Kathy Etchingham gets a fair amount of time to tell her story, and as Jimi's primary girlfriend she has a lot to say, all of which sounds like the truth to me. Dave Mason is also heard from, talking studio technique, mostly, and Zoot Money is the elder statesman of British musicians. Slash holds down the fort, doing a fine job both giving opinion and narrating.

It is the opinions that makes this DVD valuable. Drug usage is discussed, as is manager Michael Jeffries, both topics strictly forbidden in the Janie Hendrix authorized accounts. Fairness is also evidence, so it's not all nodding out. And it's great to hear from Lemmy, who brings a refreshing frankness to his statements. So if you looking for something on the life and legacy of Jimi Hendrix and isn't afraid to voice conflicting and occasionally unflattering facts and opinions, this is where you will find it.

This DVD is strictly an interview/documentary film, with just bits and pieces of Hendrix performing. Sound boring? NO WAY. All of the interviewees shed fascinating light on Hendrix the man himself as well as his extraordinary body of work, and provide insightful, intelligent comments. Even some musicians whom I believe have been historically rather reticent from being interviewed, e.g. Chris Squire and Mick Taylor, step up to the mic and add some great stories. Chris's recounts of seeing the Experience in the early days are quite hilarious!

I would consider the DVD "A Film About Jimi Hendrix" to be still the standard overall biopic on Hendrix, but this new DVD here is very complementary as a second reference and only has a little overlap of material, if any, with the "Film About" DVD. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR HENDRIX FANS!!

Here's a DVD with many mysteries. Jimi Hendrix was one of the most gifted guitarists, recording artists and stage performers of the rock era - yet the DVD contains absolutely NO footage of him actually performing any of his own material and the brief clips are not only incomplete but of cover versions. (It's like a book about Picasso but without any illustrations). Hendrix' career history, and how he amalgamated and transcended many of the traditions of the so-called 'chitlin circuit' by incorporating psychedelia and free jazz is an absolutely fascinating story; the film eschews anything resembling linear story-telling in favor of random contemporary interviews with folks who worked closely with Hendrix. Hendrix' three completed LPs are masters of creative, innovative writing and yet the DVD has no real information about his creative process. These interviews are interspersed with grainy stock footage of Swinging London and late 1960s California. There's some uncorrected misinformation interspersed throughout - despite what Mick Taylor claims, Jimi Hendrix was not a paratrooper in Viet Nam, and although Hendrix used fuzz boxes extremely well he was not the first to do so (they were around in the early 1960s). The extras are senseless - do we really need ten minutes of silent footage of the Monkees AFTER Hendrix was removed from their tour? And aside from a complete performance of "Hey Joe," why aren't there any other actual Hendrix performances available?

Look, if the producers were unable to license the clips that's fine. Just print a disclaimer on the DVD box stating that this is a documentary film and does not contain any complete performances.
