Some time back, I saw really foodgasmic reviews of Pacific Natural Foods Organic Soup, Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato, 16-Ounce Cartons (Pack of 12) and despite almost always making my own, it was on sale, so I got it (the 32 oz though, since they're the same thing, the 32oz "creamy" listed here not actually saying creamy anywhere, maybe a marketing change). On it was a coupon for $1 off this, so at my store, since I only live a few hours from where this stuff's made, well, that made this 17.6oz box a buck sixty. Seeing the ingredients and nutritional profile, I had to seriously hold back from using more coupons right then and there and buying them all.

Does it say much to tell you I went back two days later, lots of coupons available, and got EVERY SINGLE ONE (granted it was only 7) and even went--because that location of the co-op didn't have another item I wanted--to the other location a couple days after THAT and got even more? Yeah, it's that good.

The flavor is savory, aromatic, lovely. The base has a clear tomato flavor, the red peppers definitely shine through, and it also has a warm, "fully cooked" onion presence in the base. The main spices that are apparent are cumin, a touch of garlic, and a bit of chili powder. The celery is thankfully extremely mild (too many soups are heavy on the celery flavor, which is not my idea of yum). There's a touch of sweet corn in it that contrasts the otherwise savory-on-savory flavor blend really nicely. The most important part, though, are the beans! To be fair, let me state that I initially tried this soup in the reduced sodium version and loved it. It was probably the best prepared commercial soup I had ever had. It required no doctoring to improve the taste. The ingredients in addition to all being good were well balanced and the subtle taste of each came through clearly. I would rate that version of this soup at least 5 stars. Since the reduced sodium soup was not available on Amazon.com I made the mistake of purchasing a case of 12 of the full sodium version. My rating of this version is a reluctant 1 star. There is so much salt in this full sodium version of the soup that the only taste I could discern was the taste of the salt. Bummer. I will not be buying this ever again. Unless you are in the habit of adding half a shaker full of salt to your cup of soup you will likely have the same reaction I did. Buy the reduced sodium variety (490 mg sodium per serving versus 760 mg) locally if Amazon continues not to carry it.

Addendum 8/8/2014

I have found a way to doctor the full sodium version of this soup to make it palatable. By adding to the 17 oz carton of soup a single package of very low sodium organic baby food with appropriate content to balance the flavor of the soup the salt is sufficiently diluted that it is no longer the sole or even the main taste. In my opinion doing this brings the taste quality of the soup to nearly that of the reduced sodium variety. The question is why do commercial food producers still force us to resort to such actions when the medical profession has made perfectly clear our sodium intake should not exceed 1500 mg daily (and when it tastes much better without all that salt anyway.)

Great soups. I purchase these soups for my store because I can't get them out of my warehouse. I love them so I buy them by the dozen and keep them in store mostly for my own use. Some are selling at store level but in a general store situation they are a little high priced even though I am making a very low margin on them. They are targeted more to your health food store customer. I have a couple of customers who are buying them at this point. They are really there for my convenience not profit.

We used to buy lentil soup in cans, and while Amazon has always been great about replacing or refunding the damaged ones, it was always a hassle to deal with throwing away the dented cans. So when we came across this product, which comes in TetraPak packaging, we decided to give it a try. So far, we've been thrilled with the soup. It's incredibly tasty right out of the box, and the ingredients are quite wholesome. And since the packaging is far more durable than metal cans, we'll never have to waste time dealing with dented cans again!

I love the taste and very chunky soup. One star down because its sodium is so high. Half of this small pack contains over 700 sodium, so I don't recommend to eat more than 1/3 of its contents at one time. I add hot water. Also if you microwave this, the contents explode. I use clear wrap to seal a cup tightly.

This soup is so good. We've never met a pacific soup we didn't like. I cannot get enough of it. I usually crush up a clove or two of garlic and mix it in while it is cooking and add a bit of hot sauce and the end result is utter happiness and deliciousness.
