A mid-range Cisco optic that can be used with either single-mode or multi-mode 10Gb fiber runs.

We use them at work to patch into building networks. The Cisco spec states these optics are 1310-nm wavelength, and suitable for 300m runs (single-mode) or 220m runs (OM3/OM4 multi-mode). I use them with Cisco 2960-S switches on OM4 MMF-- make sure to get the 2960 models that support 10G, ie that have SFP+ interfaces (only some do). Most Cisco switches that support SFP+ will support these LRMs.

For hops between switches in the same rack or room, skip the pair of optics + patch cable, you can instead use the much cheaper DAC copper cables, which have captive transceivers, such as this 3M Cisco cable . For multi-mode only runs, consider the 10G-SR, which may be a little cheaper and provide greater range over high-grade fiber (OM3 or OM4).

Note that the factory warranty on these is very short (90 days) so you want may to consider Cisco Smartnet extended service. New factory-packaged Cisco optics are pricey compared to the generic "Cisco-compatible" competition, but I prefer to use the Cisco branded parts rather than risk potential incompatibility using a 3rd party device, especially in high-volume high-throughput applications like 10Gb.

Recommended for mid-distance 10Gb usage where the fiber type is ambiguous, and for patching into existing 10Gb networks.
