Having been disappointed in the past with results from using the 'blue' tape, I decided to give this a whirl. Good decision. This product does a much better job at minimizing/eliminating situations where paint 'bleeds' under the tape. Remember, this is a tool. Any tool will only perform if properly used. So, take your time to ensure that you have it laid in a straight line and that the seam is properly pressed down on the existing surface. The results will actually be based on how well you do the prep work. Based on my experience, the only problems I had were due to the fact that I didn't have the tape either properly aligned or seated. Those problems are minimal and will be quickly corrected. Tomorrow. (I took one star off because it is a tad pricey. . .)

I have used blue painters' tape many times and have experienced the "edge bleed" that can occur. So, this time, I spent the extra money for the Frog tape. In my experience, I did not observe any less "edge bleed" with the Frog tape than with the blue tape. It's an okay choice for masking. But, it does not magically create "crisp edges." I recommend that you use whichever is cheaper and don't expect miracles.

Frog Tape works... probably better than 3M's blue tape. Here is the key: after pressing smoothly and putting it on a clean surface, wet the edge to be painted with a damp rag or sponge and let it dry. Don't soak it, just get it damp. This will activate the blocking adhesive and prevent paint from bleeding under. A professional painter taught me this trick, it works well. Also, make sure you are using new tape, not something that's been in the garage all year. Finally, it's best to remove it before the paint has completely dried (ie the next day). Happy Painting!

First, I would like to address the bad reviews. They must have all been written by men, because I read the instructions and it turned out awesome. I didn't just rely on the instructions on the package, I also went to the manufacturer. I read their whole FAQ and decided even with the bad reviews, I was going to try this stuff. Blue tape has never worked for me. It crumples and I have to layer it on. The paint seeps underneath and I feel like crying. Now I will tell you, I took my time. I am seven months pregnant and can't really move that fast anyway. I read their FAQ on using it on textured walls and I was a bit worried, but I followed their advice to a "t". I placed the tape carefully and then smoothed it with my hands. Then, I went back over it with a flat object to ensure adhesion. I have used this similar method with blue tape and it has failed me. Next, I began to paint. I painted the corners and sides first and then the middle. I waited an hour for it to dry and then repeated this method. I crossed my fingers and tore the tape. PERFECTION! Do not rush!It might have also helped that I used the expensive paint. Having toddlers means I need to be able to scrub the walls. Stop with the bad reviews! This stuff is worth the money!

I sprayed 2 coats of Sherwin Williams Paint from a professional Graco paint sprayer, let it dry for 8 days (out of town) applied this Frogtape and began my second color with a brush and roller. It was on my walls for 4 hours and 20 minutes. I removed it as soon as my second coat of the second color was applied. This crappy tape ripped off a TON of paint from my wall, and leaked about 15% of the line. Really another worthless product from Shurtape. I can't believe I got suckered in to buying this stuff.
I'll stick with 3M.. ( No, I'm not affiliated with 3M. I work for the airlines)

I rarely tape off any project, because taping is actually far more work than actually learning how to have a steady hand (and the majority of people, barring any sort of neurological or physical illness that causes you to shake, can actually teach themselves how to paint a nearly straight line with practice).

First off, your results with painters tape will vary based on a few things:

One: Texture of your project. If you're taping a smooth wall, or piece of furniture, your lines will be smoother. That's just common sense. Obviously a textured wall is going to bleed.

Two: Cleanliness. Before you paint, you'll want to make sure your wall or furniture (or whatever you're painting) is free of dust and dirt. Give it a once over with some degreaser or alcohol. This will help the tape to adhere better.

If you have a textured wall, I've found that using a putty knife to go over the tape's edge will help to get the tape into the grooves. If you're using two different colors and are using tape to create a sharp line, use the base color, and go over the edge with it to activate the adhesive and create a barrier, which will avoid seeping. The only drawback to this is that you will create a definite ridge.

There are times when you absolutely need to tape, but if you can learn to do a straight line (along ceilings and baseboards etc), save yourself some time and money and don't tape. If you do need to tape, Shurtape (Frog Tape) has been the clear winner in my opinion (they also make a blue version of tape as well, which is a "pro line") in regards to bleeding and seeping less.
