Personally, I prefer to make my own cranberry sauce, but my husband insists on the canned version; and it must be jellied, not whole. So every time I make turkey for dinner I have to go out and buy a can of sauce. The last time I did that, I paid $2.49 a can; I was "fit to be tied"! So, I decided to take a gander at Amazon and there it was, a case of my husband's favorite sauce for a lower price and what's more; an abundant supply. Yes, I realize it will be cheaper in November and I will stock up then. For now, I am happy!

I like to stock up on this around Thanksgiving time when the stores have it on sale. The tang goes with nearly everything from traditional turkey to pork and even fish. It's an easy way to get a serving of fruit and has the benefits of cranberry juice.

Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce Jellied, 14-Ounce (397g) Bottles (CANS!) (Pack of 24), from Ocean Spray.
Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce brings back memories for me, memories of loading trucks and freight cars with cases of cans of cranberry sauce, and cases of bottles of cranberry juice. The freight cars were loaded by hand, one case at a time, while the trucks had to have the cases stacked on wooden pallets, that were then loaded on the trailer trucks using a pallet jack or a fork lift. This was a fall seasonal job, after labor day, when my job driving an ice cream truck was over for the summer season. I remember while on break, drinking a warm bottle of cranberry juice, and finding that it had a quick laxative effect. Gangway!
This was also in the fall of 1963, and I heard that JFK had died, while I was on a coffee break at a diner across the street, and watching the breaking news on the small black and white portable television in the diner. I don't think that the Onset, Massachusetts, Ocean Spray cranberry factory even exists anymore, but it will always be a memory for me.
Ocean Spray cranberry products will be a little more expensive than the store brands, but you can always be sure that it is the best quality brand in the store. Outside of the stores, the only exceptions may be some small institutional companies selling canned goods to schools. For each of them, Ocean Spray would just insert a different stack of labels in the canning production line. Same sauce, different label. I don't think that Ocean Spray was making store brand canned goods for the supermarkets. They would be made by other cranberry canning companies.Read more ›
