This magnet works. Unlike scrub sponges, your arm stays dry. The surface of the magnet that goes inside the aquarium is rough enough to actually take the algae off the glass. Unlike another brand of algae magnet that I've used, it floats, so you don't have to tie a string to it. If you haven't used magnets before, keep in mind that there will be places in your aquarium that a magnet may not be able to reach or you may have to move things around to get there (i.e. around the filter and heater). If your aquarium's close to the wall, getting to the back of the aqarium gets tricky too. A yardstick helps. Whatever you do, please don't buy this product for an acrylic aquarium. It's meant only for glass like it says in the title. The manufacturer makes one for acrylic. I can't review that one since I've never had acrylic, but make sure you're getting the right kind for your tank.

Really great product, removes algae from the glass very efficiently, without having to wet your arms and the floor around the tank! the magnet is extremely strong, even if the inside part is away from the glass, once you approach the outside part to the glass, the inside part comes right away!
Just beware if you have very fine substrate, because if you get very close to the bottom, some of the substrate can get caught in the scrub and before you know it, you got a big scratch in your glass!

I've used this for over a year and here are my thoughts.

Pros:
Works great on GLASS aquariums.
Cleans the algae on the glass great, just make sure you use the rough side to do the scraping.
Cleans without you having to get your hand down in the water.
Easy to take the Mag Float around corners

Cons:
Hard to clean at the corners and seams of the glass.
Be careful if you have sand in your tank as it can scratch the glass if sand particles get trapped in the Mag Float as you drag it around.

Tips:
When you are cleaning corners I find it easier to put the Mag Float vertical and drag it up and down rather than horizontally. You'll get more coverage that way.
When you are finished cleaning, take the Mag Float to the top and pull away your end of it so the Mag Float floats up to the surface nearest where you just released it. Then just use your fingers and grab it out of the water. If you take your end and grab it with the magnet then you'll likely splash yourself and your surroundings.

Overall I give this 4.5 stars. Hard to clean the corners but it is what it is and great maintenance between full-blown tank cleanings.

Highly recommended.

Remember the old days of lumbering to clean the glass of your tank? You had to buy a special extended length algae scraper which didn't work well so you had to stick your hand into the tank and scrub the sides with an algae pad. After you were done, you had to stand there with a soaking arm mumbling how sucky it was to clean algae.

Then came the magnetic scrubber. It was a definite improvement, except that the scrubber would separate on the inside of the tank and fall to the bottom just out of the magnetic force-field's range. This would require you to stick your hand into the tank and put the scrubber back together, leaving you standing there with a soaking arm thinking how cleaning algae was still kinda sucky.

Then came the Mag Float Magnetic Cleaner.

I first encountered this item at a local fish store when the shop keeper scrubbed the front of the tank of the fish I was going to buy. As is the case with magnetic scrubbers, the scrubber separated. But as is the case with the Mag Float, the scrubber floated to the top of the tank where it could be easily reattached without getting the hands wet. I chose to spend my money on the Mag Float rather than the fish.

That was about a decade ago and I have always had a Mag Float for every tank I have ever kept since then (which has been alot of tanks). This item is an absolute necessity for the discerning fish keeper. Are there other things that can do the job? Yes. Are there other items that work as well as the Mag Float? No.

Coming from a man that has been joyfully learning about aquariums and keeping fish for fifteen wonderful years, spend the extra money and get a Mag Float, you won't be disappointed.

P.S. get the size bigger than your recommended size, it is worth it. Acrylic tank owners beware, these guys can really do some serious scratching.

I use this small magnet to clean the top & sides of my 6g Fluval Edge aquarium.

CONSTRUCTION: this set consists of two magnets encased in plastic.
The "outside" magnet has a felt surface to avoid scratching your aquarium.
The "inside" magnet cleaning material is the "hook" half of a hook+loop (aka velcro) fastener.

USE: the Fluval Edge aquarium has a built-on glass roof, and access is through a 5x7" porthole on the top. The inside magnet skips a little on my aquarium glass but cleans green filament algae off my glass easily.

PROS: the FLOATING feature is awesome, makes it easy to retrieve the magnet without reaching into the water.
CLEANS AROUND CORNERS - The magnet is strong enough that the "inside" magnet just jumps from one wall to the other when you go around corners. very cool and functional.

CONS: as with all magnets I've used, the scraped off algae ends up floating away into the tank and getting hung up on my plants. par for the course...
BULKY inside magnet housing. A lower-profile magnet would be better for me. The Mag Float is hard to maneuver around my driftwood and plants because it sticks out into the aquarium.

OVERALL: cleans well, easy to use on my hard-to-clean and cramped 6gal aquarium.
