I'm a fan of many of the Newman's Own products and the philosophy behind them. The fact that the company has donated so much of its earnings to charities is a big plus for me. I wish more corporations were so inclined.

Pomegranate Licorice Twists are a tasty addition to the Newman's Own line. They really captured the essence of pomegranate in these twists, something that's not so easy to do. While I enjoy the taste, I found them a little tough, even though the "best before" date on my package is for March 2012. I expected them to be a little softer, but the chewiness didn't hinder my enjoyment of the product overmuch. However, it did cause them to get stuck in my teeth. It was a while after eating before the last traces of these twists were dissolved.

Here's a list of the ingredients:
Organic Wheat Flour, Organic Sugar, Corn Syrup, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Vegetable Glycerin, Sunflower Oil, Elderberry Extract, Citric Acid, Natural Flavor, Pomegranate Juice Concentrate, Licorice Root Extract.

The twists are part of Newman's Own Organics division, started by Nell Newman. Organic is great, but it translate into a costlier product. Comparable Strawberry Twist Twizzlers are about half the price and are fewer calories per piece, yet have half the iron and protein of the Pomegranate Twists. Twizzlers taste about as good and are softer too. Consumers must decide for themselves if it is worth a premium price for a snack product very similar to the competition. If you value (mostly) healthy ingredients and enjoy exotically flavored licorice, then it just may be worth it to you.

I have a problem with sugar addiction. I love candy and am trying to ween myself slowly off of sugar. I figured the 1st step in changing my sweet tooth would be to switch to organic candy. I bought a package of the Sour Cherry and the Sour Strawberry. This is the best licorice I have ever tasted! It is wonderful. Just the right blend of tart and sweet. This is one of the best tasting products that Newman's Own has come out with. If you love licorice and sweet and tart, this is for you.

When it is time for an adult licorice, have a Newman's Own.

I used to eat packs of licorice as a kid, usually while staying up late watching movies and playing Monopoly. Well, those days are over. I can't eat a pack of licorice anymore. For one, I would never fall asleep and I would put all of that sugar straight on to my gut. But it is also that my taste buds are just a bit - a little bit - more mature. I don't like to eat something with all kinds of bizarre ingredients and a chemical aftertaste. I don't trust a product that looks like plastic and seems to have an odd resin coating.

These are worth the calories, and you don't have to regret it later. The flavor of these chews is just so much better than TwizXXX or SwitXXXX. The sweet, dark and tart flavor of the pomegranate is delicious. It is a genuine flavor. It is also a very substantial chew. You can chew on one of these for quite some time.

My wife has no fond memories of licorice. "I can't stand those," she says, when I point to a pack of twizXXX in the candy aisle. "I won't eat them." She means it. But she loved these. She thought that they had more of a cherry taste, albeit a tart cherry.

This was an interesting twist: The kids loved this one more than the adults. You could pop-psychologize that one to death (children open-minded vs. adults unable to let go of preconceived ideas of what "licorice" is supposed to be), or we could just have weird kids. In any case, the reviews (over an empty package) went something like this:

Adult 1: "A little unorthodox, but overall I like 'em."

Adult 2: "They taste like medicine and I didn't finish mine."

Teen: "They're good. A little weird... but good."

Kid 1 (age 8): "I really, really like them."

Kid 2 (age 2): "..." (Mouth was full of licorice.)

The flavor and texture IS different from the corn-syruped red stuff that we're used to. If you or your Licorice Lovers wouldn't be able to get past that, click "Helpful" below and move along. It's not different to the point of unrecognizable, like many "all-natural" products, however. These licorice sticks are smoother and more dense than traditional licorice, appealingly chewy, and the pomegranate flavor adds a bit of a twist. They are all-natural (impressively no artificial colors) and you'll be able to read and understand all the ingredients, assuring you that you'll not be ingesting anything that once was drilled out of an oil field. They've even got a couple of grams of fiber per serving. AND, all of Newman's Own profits go to charities.

Those are a couple of facts that you can feel undeniably good about.

We were planning a trip and I wanted the kids to have healthier snacks instead of fast food and gas station snacks the whole way. My kids ask for twizzlers. That when I got on amazon to find a healthier option. So I ordered these. At first, I thought the flavor was a little weak only bc I was comparing it to twizzlers. After a few days of eating these I really have acquired a taste for these. The flavor is great and I love the texture. I got online and reordered more. Since then I have tasted a twizzlers pull and peel and I can taste the chemical junk in it. That's something I never noticed before. I guess I was used to it. I'll never buy them again. We love Newman's own licorice! We will continue buying. Amazon has the best price too.
