Much of the Amarelli line of Italian licorice is pure, bitter, brittle licorice. Sassolini is different. In fact, it is, as far as I know, unique in the licorice world. (For more than a decade I've been a co-owner of a candy store that specializes in gourmet licorice from around the world, and I've never come across anything quite like Sassolini.) The word "sassolini" means little stones. And this is exactly what Sassolini licorice looks like. A handful of them looks just like a handful of pebbles of assorted shapes and colors.

The outside of each piece of Sassolini is a relatively hard, vanilla-flavored layer. Inside is a softer, relatively sweet, almost jelly-like center with a strong, pleasant licorice and anise flavor. This is a great flavor combination and one that is extremely pleasant to the taste.

I would highly recommend this for those who are interested in exploring Italian licorice but who are not ready to take the plunge into eating pure, unsweetened licorice.

I grew up in Italy going to the "tabaccheria" (cigarette store) where they would sell these liquorice tin boxes, I remember I used to pay about 50 liras at that time... the company is more than 50 years old and now that I moved in USA i stumbled in them and started to order them online... they taste just like when I was 10 year sold.... EXCELLENT product if you look for 100% pure liquorice with NO SUGAR added (beside for some variations like the Bianconeri and sassolini were they are coated in white sugar coating).

This and the other Amarelli licorice I tried (Confettini Bianconeri) are really good. This one is a tad better, because of more licorice per unit coating. Only knocked down from 5-star because you don't get all that much for the price. But, I guess, quality is always at a premium.
