I ordered this to move the data off my old MacBook Pro HDD to a new Crucial 512 GB m4 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s CT512M4SSD2. It's a great value for that purpose.

The Good:

* Very easy to use.
* Does exactly what it is described to do; connect 2.5" laptop SATA HDD's to a USB port.
* Inexpensive without being cheap.

The Bad:

* The rubber sleeve for your old HDD is really only good for protecting your disk while you transfer data off it. You will not want to use this product as a solution for using your old HDD as an external drive for much longer than needed to copy/clone/rsync your data off it.
* This is the WRONG product if you need to connect a 3.5" HDD via a SATA to USB adapter.
* You need to connect both USB ports on the adapter. One is for data and the other is for the extra power some HDDs need to spin up.

When I recently bought an Intel SSD to upgrade my wife's laptop, I bought an Importer520 2.5" SATA Hard Drive Case, a type I had used before, in the hopes that that case would be able to be used during the cloning of the hard drive and also enable the old drive to be used as a portable backup solution later. (That case is a stunning value in general at a few dollars, though it does not offer any real shock absorption, and I recommend it.)

Unfortunately, though that other case and cable work well, its electronics do not report the full device information to the operating system via the USB port. Thus I was unable to use the Acronis transfer software bundled with the new SSD drive, which software is designed to exit out if it doesn't sense an Intel-brand SSD. With the Intel SSD in the external case, the OS couldn't recognize the drive as an Intel drive and the software exited out. (I mucked about with Clonezilla in an attempt to clone the drive by other means, but without success.)

I then purchased this case and cable in the hopes it would work for the transfer, and it did, very well. Pros and cons of the model follow.

+ Circuitry in the cable reports full device ID and other hardware info to the operating system.
+ Works at USB 2.0 speeds.
+ Cute, tiny red and blue LED lights indicate when the drive is in use.
+ Silicone half-case is nicely designed, even including small detents at the four corners to allow stacking. The open sides should allow air to passively cool an enclosed drive well enough, if air passage is not otherwise blocked.Read more ›

I most other reviews have covered everything else so let me share some other info. To begin with you do not have to use both of USB cables to power the hard drive. Most of hard drives in laptops only need 5W. So read the label on your hard drive and if it needs 5 W then only use one USB connection.

Also one of my harddrives was bad so as soon as I connect the hard-drive to this cable the lights on the cable go off. Since there is no instructions that come with this adapter I thought I should share this bit of information.

I got this after our laptop died. After doing some research and looking around, i came across this in Amazon. Once we got this product, we got our laptop's hard drives out, got hooked up to the hard drive, plugged "both" USB ports to a working laptop, it read the hard drive without any trouble at all. The connection to the hard drive is not snug so once it is connected and hard drive is being read, it must remain untouched otherwise, it will fail to read the drive and have to start all over again. Use rubber bands to secure the cable to the hard drive and it is fine.

My toshiba a505d -s6987 stopped working for i dunno what reason. I used this adapter to check my hard drive and attached it to other pc, and it work just as i need it. It turned out that my hard drive is good and can pull out data as a usb. And now, i figuring out what is wrong with my laptop. It was working well recently until that time i turned it on and nothing comes in the screen and now lights in the keyboard and the hard drive icon that supposed to be flashing is out. But the batterries andpower icons are on. It works for me,

I fix computers for a living and i have to save a lot of data from people's hard drives. This is a easy and fast way to plug it into their 2.5 inch sata hard drives and copy the data. Works great every time. THe price is good too. This is made for 2.5 inch drives only, not for 3.5 inch which requires external power.
