Absolutely beautiful brush.

Thankfully it came packed in it's own box, which enabled it to withstand the "amazon" packing treatment. Those of you who order frequently high end and fragile items know what I mean!

It was the only item out of the 3 brushes I ordered in the packing box that was not damaged!

The size 16 maestro kolinsky filbert had a broken/shattered handle IN a sealed bag (was certainly shipped in that condition!) and the size 18 maestro kolinsky filbert has completely mis-shapen hair fibers from being packed tightly in a bag with no protection to the brush head(the entire brush head tilts at 30 degrees and hopefully I can get it back)!

No packing slip was enclosed.

This brush was the happy exception to that order, not only did it come in it's own cardboard box but also contained a piece of lint free wiping cloth and a small bar of da vinci brush soap (about the size of a hotel courtesy bar). That makes it a nice package. The box is not high-end like the winsor newton series 7 larger sizes,it is simple cardboard, but the addition of the lint free cloth and the quality brush soap make it a nice combo, perfect for a special gift for the artist in your life,or yourself!

That pleasure notwithstanding, the severe and escalating product damage which has now culminated in receiving a completely destroyed very expensive paintbrush forces me to now shop elsewhere for my artist material needs. It is no longer worth it! And at least other art supply retailers will replace a defective/damaged item no questions asked and without the pain and hassle of returning and receiving the damaged one back first. Also, with other retailers the incidence of damage is far less common, but when it happens, they make it right-right away!

Already reviewed this product in another size. This is a premium watercolorists brush that is soft, comes to an elongated point. Best for softer papers (Fabriano) and those who do not torture the tip of the brush. Well balanced in the hand, well made. This is the Charles Reid brush for his workshops.

This brush is a must for the watercolor artist who prefers a soft, long tapered point. I purchased this brand in other sizes also for a class with Charles Reid (he recommends these for his type of style). I have painted for years and have my own preferences for brushes, but these are very fine brushes for those who prefer sable, soft, long point etc. Watch your strokes (move from fat end to point) and don't work the tip too much and it will last for a long time.

great brush as usual BUT...........

I have told amazon I would no longer be buying artist materials from them a brief while ago and I meant it! Too many damaged and destroyed items due to incompetant packing methods and no responses from amazon on the matter.

The reason I purchased this brush is that my wife needed a few household items, one of which was an add-on,so I needed a small purchase to make the 25 dollar minimum order requirement. So, I broke my own rule and ordered this brush.Being the pragmatist, I had hoped that the brush would come wrapped/packed properly so that I might lift my own self-imposed ban (or at least consider it!).
No luck. The brush was tossed in an oversized box loose. No bag,no protective wrap. The brush head was completely exposed and unprotected and the hairs were frayed from being crushed.Furthermore, upon opening the box I discovered the brush hairs of an expensive brush literally sticking out of the opening on the back of the amazon shipping box! The back of the box had a 1/8th inch opening with no tape and the brush head was hanging out of it! Guess I am lucky the brush did not fall out in transit! Totally unacceptable and unfortunately reaffirms my decision to shop similar items elsewhere. Amazon has great prices but the packing standards have really gone from bad to worse! Until I receive some response from amazon that these conditions are going to improve I am done with it.

a top quality kolinsky sable brush for water media at a phenomenal amazon price! Does not get much better. You may prefer a Winsor Newton series 7,but it's not a better brush. At that level it is a matter of preference, not a qualitative distinction.

once again, along with the great amazon price comes scary amazon shipping.

Two very expensive brushes were shipped across country in a padded envelope with no packing material,no reinforcement in the envelope to prevent crushing. Not even a "fragile" label to help ensure gentle handling.

Time and again I am puzzled as expensive items are recklessly packed while inexpensive items are sometimes overpacked?
Packaging feedback at amazon.com is purported to help them improve shipping/packing methods. While I appreciate amazon in many ways, after all the feedback received (from me and I am sure many many others) and no improvements I am starting to believe that the packaging feedback goes to a virtual shredder and that it serves only as therapy for frustrated customers to vent!

Style Name: Round Long TaperSize: Size 7 Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This is a medium-priced Kolinsky sable watercolor brush in size 7, a very commonly used brush size. I've been painting watercolors for fifty years now and I always use a seven and a ten as my usual brushes, with occasionally a flat and a fine detail brush or rigger. But I actually can go with just two brushes and the size seven is always in my kit and usually what I am painting with. I can wash in smaller areas and do detail with a decent sable size 7.

Here's something I wasn't aware of: the "series" numbers actually mean something about the shape of the brush. In this case, it's a Series 35. According to DaVinci, Series 35 has an extra long taper at the tip. The longer taper is great for fast, loose watercolor painting and painting long lines (rather like a rigger--the long rigger fibers let you drag it along and create a straight line.) I often paint with only two brushes--a size 10 for washes and larger areas, and a size 7 for detail and smaller areas. This brush, with the ability to do lines more easily, is a good choice compared to a series 10 or 11. Series 10 has a sharper point and Series 11 has a fuller belly, which would hold more water and wash.

This brush is lower priced than the Winsor Newton Series 7 by about thirty percent, and it is a bit different, but it still is a worthy brush. While not "cheap"--this is a brush I recommend when I teach a class once in a while. The problem is, good brushes are not cheap ever, but bad brushes will frustrate you. This brush will not frustrate you,

The point is not quite as sharp as the Winsor brush, and the point is why you are using a size seven. It also is not as "snappy", that is, it seems softer than a Winsor brush.
