This is more coarse than the retail filter pad of Aquaclear but its good enough and there are no major drawbacks.

*****Update after 10 months of use:
This sponge is inferior quality compared to the AquaClear retail sponge. I am using this side-by-side with the retail AquaClear sponge of the same age, and this generic sponge has become brittle and is literally falling apart after only 10 months of use. Pieces of this generic sponge are starting to break apart while the AquaClear retail sponge still seems as good as new. I clean my filter only once every 3 weeks so the sponges have only been gently squeezed clean about 13 times in the past 10 months. I expected this sponge to last a year but I guess it will not make it. When this generic sponge was brand new it was more coarse than the retail sponge, but now that it is 10 months old and disintegrating, it seem very much more coarse with less surface area for debris to collect and for bacteria to grow. I do not recommend this product over the retail version. Maybe it will work fine if you only clean the filter once or twice a year.

These sponges are a great deal. They are ALMOST exactly the same as the one's that come in Aquaclear 50's, but the pores are bigger. They will work just fine in a filter. Unfortunately, I bought them to make sponge filters in nursery tanks and the pores are big enough for the fry to swim into. I'll keep them though, sponges don't sit around for long. There's always something you can do with them.

these are the same as the more expensive sponge packs, they just come in a bulk pack wrapped only in plastic. same exact sponges, work great. buy these.
