The main thing to remember is that the color of your "base" icing should be dark as well. If your intention is to turn an old fashion butter cream icing into black... don't think you'll get the desired results. BUT, if you make a chocolate base icing, adding this gel coloring will certainly allow you to create "black icing" for piping decorations, or for cookies. You don't need much.

I've also used this coloring to darken other tints. For example, most instructions on food coloring tell you to add 50 drops of liquid green to get "green" (forest green) on a cake mix batch. For gel, they suggest to use almost the entire tub. I've tried it both ways and the color was never dark enough. I searched online and they suggested to add some blue, but that made my green look a little cobaltish. Finally, I remembered I had this little guy in the pantry. One loaded toothpick and that was all she wrote.

Needless to say, if you are looking to color icing for decorations, and your consistency is important, gel is the way to go.

Thank you to every poster who suggested using black gel with chocolate frosting! Never would have thought to do it, but results were great. Disclaimer: I am definitely not a cake decorator (ask my kids) but I had the inspiration to frost Halloween cupcakes with black for my kindergartener. Used my basic uncooked cocoa buttercream (enough for at least 36 cupcakes) and used less than 1/4 teaspoon black gel. Good, rich black color, almost no artificial taste, and no stain on fingers or tongue! Decorated a few with Lego skeletons, know he'll be thrilled.

I needed to add the entire container into a tub of white frosting but it was very black then. I was making a zebra cake and it turned out perfectly. If you need black icing, this is what you need. I didn't think to add it to chocolate icing, maybe I would not have had to use so much of the Wilton Tint with chocolate icing. Leaves a purple stain on things so be careful.

I was so worried that this was going to turn the icing pink for my daughter's first birthday cake icing instead of peach. Even when I first put it in, it looked pink. However, as soon as you get it mixed really well, it is a really pretty peach color. Make sure to use a toothpick to add the coloring a little at a time. Just dip the tip into the coloring and run it through the icing and mix it really well. I think I did that three times before I had the color I used but I also made a ton of icing to cover the entire cake. I would definitely purchase this again!

I just finished making a huge batch of buttercream frosting using my typical recipe, I tasted the untinted version and was satisfied. Unfortunately for me I did not do a small test amount before applying this Christmas Red to the entire batch - it has completely spoilt the frosting, leaving it with a harsh, very unpleasant after taste. I have purchased cakes from Costco in the past and have learned to avoid anything that has red frosting as I get the exact same taste. I also did not find this to be anywhere close to a Christmas red, perhaps I did not use enough, but given the resulting taste having only achieved a pinkish red, I can only imagine what a horrible tasting mess you would be left with if you tried to achieve a real red - my frosting ended up being inedible!
