My 5 year old was having trouble with handwriting entering kindergarten. These grippers have helped him immensely. They were recommended by a friend who is an occupational therapist. He's learning the correct grips, his grasp is firmer and his pencil marks are darker. The bright colors make it fun for him. Very happy with this. Got the 12 pack to have extras around as they'll inevitably get lost and need to be replaced at school, home, etc.

These pencil grips are a good start to eliminating the thumb-wrap hold of a pencil. We used these all through 2nd grade. It forced my daughter to place her fingers on the pencil correctly, but when the grip was not on the pencil, she would revert back to the thumb-wrap. With hard work on finger exercises over the summer she started 3rd grade with triangle grips. She has to really THINK about finger placement, it does not come natural--that thumb-wrap is her "natural." She is now holding the pencil correctly and the triangle is now a better gripper for her. The triangle allows her to hold the pencil more firmly than the grotto and is uncomfortable to hold in a thumb-wrap position which makes a nice reminder for her. Her handwriting is much better with the triangle then the grotto. The biggest negative about the grotto (reason for 4 stars) is that the grotto finger holes lead my daughter to hold the pencil with more rounded fingers which placed the tip of her thumb and pointer finger on the pencil, not the pad of her fingers. We spent too much time correctly that! However, since I couldn't go to school with her everyday, the grotto helped her at school with knowing where to place her fingers and I'm not sure she was old enough in 2nd grade to correctly use the triangle. I wish I would have used this in preschool and kindergarten--I didn't realize it was an issue. I do recommend the grotto for young children, but I prefer the triangle for older children that can understand how to correctly use it.

Grotto grips are really well designed for slightly older (4 and up) students to guide and support best finger position for the most efficient pencil grip, the dynamic tripod position (this is where the thumb opposes the tip of index and side of top joint of middle finger). In the end, if a student can learn to use this pencil grip, their chances of having good writing quality and endurance are probably maximized. I also felt that Amazon's price here was really good compared to what therapy catalogs want.

I'm a pediatric occupational therapist working with kids with autism in a specialized public school, and the grotto grip makes a world of difference for many of my kids. Superior to other pencil grips in that it prevents crossover of the thumb and index finger as well as over gripping and fisted grasping. The squishy feel also gives it a nice sensory component. I sent one home with one of my second graders whose mother emailed me to say what a huge difference it made in her fine motor skills.

My daughter has struggled to hold a pencil properly. It seemed she found some new way to hold it every time she picked it up & we needed to constantly remind her to "fix her fingers". She can use this independently and it works well. We sometimes use it with the handi-writer.

I like this grip a lot. It really helps our students hold their pencil correctly. When we first start using these, we do have to spend a little more time correcting their finger positions but it's much easier for them to keep their fingers placed properly with the grip.
