Been using Better Homes and Gardens, and Punch! 3D Home software on PC for years, and when I switched totally to Mac, I was tired of having to use Fusion to run my latest (but dated) program Better Homes and Gardens Home Designer 7.0. So, I asked for this, HGTV Home Design for Mac, since it's one of the few in a reasonable price range for Mac OSX.

I'm a fairly advanced user and found this program easy to pick up on. However, that doesn't make it keen. Sometimes it makes me wonder what the software testers were thinking when they approved this for the retail market. Some may find it convenient that another wall automatically begins to draw after you draw the initial wall, and you have to double click (or something along the lines of multi-clicking) to get it to stop drawing walls, or create a polygon of sorts. Flat out annoying, especially when you're using a Bamboo Pen to draw up the plans. I decided I'd get over that issue (after I exhausted the menus to see if I could change this preference) and just continue with the design I was working on.

Limited changes to walls as far as plan drawing goes. And it wasn't until I was half way through one side of the "house" plan that I noticed the drag and drop (not point and place, which I prefer) doors cannot be "opened". They're practically ornaments on the wall unless it's a glass paned door, then you can check a box that says "look through" and it makes the glass transparent. So in the 3D view, which is quite fast on my MacBook Pro, All I saw was a bunch of closed doors. I couldn't look from room to room unless I walked through a closed door like a ghost. I also attempted to make all the doors cased openings instead so I could at least get a feel for the plan...

For years I used Broderbund's 3D Home Architect on my PC. It was a simple program and had some limitations, but I successfully designed several projects where I could see exactly what things would look like and the contractor or architect was able to take my plan and use it. It required a bit of learning, but not much, and the manual solved most of my problems. It was flexible and allowed resizing objects on the fly, a big plus. It also kept doors and windows away from corners to allow for casing. Cabinets were easy to place and resize, and easy to design, including calling out the number of drawers and drawer heights.

Then I got a Mac and expected to find a similar program available (after all, its forte is design), but pickings are slim for a simple home design program.

I certainly didn't find it with HGTV Design. Setting up walls is pretty easy, and dimensions show clearly, but that's about it. I can't list all the things that frustrate or infuriate me - there's not enough time, but here are a few: The cabinet choices appear to be many, but they seem duplicative. You're stuck with a bunch of too-small-to-see fixed designs instead of nice flexible generic ones that allow you to make custom changes. I couldn't find any corner cabinets. Cabinet dimensions do not call front-to-back the "depth" dimension. Dimensions cannot be changed on the plan - you must type in the size in the "Inspector" (after unlocking the object) and then guess which dimension you really want to change. There is no picture of the object you are trying to resize. There is a crazy "maintain aspect" mode which by default locks dimensions into their initial proportions, so if you change one dimension, all the others are changed. You can turn it off, but you must do that each time.

Purchased this for my daughter who wants to use it to redesign her room. On a macbook pro laptop running snow. I have an administrator account for me and a user account for her. The program crashes upon startup from the user account but not from the administrator account. Even with parental controls turned off. I contacted support and they tested this and it is in fact true. This is a bug that had I known of prior to purchase, I would have purchased something else. The support person was helpful and said they will be working on a fix but gave no timetable for that nor offered me any refund. On their support web site, there is no mention of this bug.

If the bug is fixed, I am happy to write an update mentioning that and rating the actual functionality of the product.

So I have never used a product like this. Everything that deals with Mac is usually very user friendly. I like things that are simple and quick. This product requires a learning process of how to use the program. I guess its just like anything else you do in life, you must learn it before saying if you like it or not. So in the beginning I was frustrated because I wanted quick results. So I slowly started to learn it. once I understood the program with tons of help with the manual it became quite easy. The graphics are amazing and the 3D is just cool. The program gave us options that we never even considered for our bathroom. I already did our kitchen and plan on redoing both the bathrooms next. For this product I started with the master bath but stopped in the middle because we are doing the kids bath first. The kids bathroom is going to be quite easy. But the master requires much work. So just be patient in the beginning and you will love this program, just give it a chance.
