Building a HTPC, I had one half of an internal USB header left on my motherboard, and a TV that has a RS-232 port for computer control. Need I say more? The only spot of trouble was that the connecting cable is wired such that it requires a full USB header. In my case, I already was using the keyed half of that header for the HTPC case's remote control / LCD display.

A little work to pull the pins from the connector block to reassign them for my needs and that was that. However, the soldering job on one of the pins was bad -- the wire for the ground connection came right off with barely any strain placed on the wire. Don't know if I just got a shoddily soldered unit or if it's common. Since I was tinkering with something most customers don't mess around with, I'm not going to knock them much -- 1/2 star. The other 1/2 star I'm docking for including a cable that insists on using a full USB header even though only it only needs 1/2 of one. If you're buying something like this, you probably know what you're doing, so I think using a slimline connector would be a nice improvement.

Including a half-height bracket is a great touch for those using more compact systems.

Installation was totally simple. The included driver CD flawlessly set up the drivers for Windows 7. The OS sees the device and manual testing via TeraTerm and a quick .NET app confirms the drivers are up to spec.

The port has worked perfectly for my purposes, and I'm very pleased with this device.

About how great the StarTech items are. I have at least five of them now -- there are literally HUNDREDS of different ones -- and all of mine are working perfectly and did so from about one minute after plugging them in.

I am just finishing putting a junkyard Dell Inspiron in operation. Fast 2008 machine, SATA-only MOBO and no old-fashion serial port. I bought it a SATA drive for C: but wanted to use a PATA drive I had on hand as a backup. By the time I got the other required stuff installed -- a Star Tech WLAN and a Lucient winmodem for those no DSL days you get in ruralsville -- I had only one slot left -- a PCIe x1, between the WLAN card and the video card.

No knockout on the back panel either. Lots of room to make a hole for a db9 but my enthusiasm for iron filings on the motherboard is real low in this century.

Star Tech to the rescue! A PEX2IDE card furnishing an IDE connector (master and slave) would fit in the PCIe slot and there was ample room on that card's slot plate for the RS232 (db9) connector and conversion PC board from the ICUSB232INT1. I cut the extra hole in the IDE plate, screwed the connector (PC board is on the connector) to it, disconnected the power, shoved it in the slot hooked up the USB cable to the header on the MOBO and about two minutes later Win XP reported finding a new IDE controller and USB device for which it requested the (furnished) Star Tech driver.

Two minutes after that, I had configured the UPS options (power icon in control panel) to do basic signaling to an APS UPS using Com 4 (the new) port and -- VOILA! XP and the UPS can now discuss an orderly shutdown during a power failure. Yeah, the modern hard drives take getting dumped better than the old ones, but why push your luck?

Received the first one ordered and found the 9-Pin IDC Connector to the Host did not plug into the receptor of the motherboard Host. The 9-Pin Connector has the covered over, solid pin hole, used for matching, it is on the incorrect side of the 9-Pin IDC Connector. Have tried this on two different ASUS motherboards and they were proven not to fit.

Contacted Amazon for a Replacement only to receive an exact to the first one that has the incorrect 9-Pin IDC Connector.

My hopes is that this RATING draws attention to the StarTech.com and they test the product. Perhaps these are from a small manufactured batch.
