I bought this, primarily, because I was tired of sweeping up shells & having weeds sprout all over my garden. I wasn't sure what seeds were in the blend so I bought it at Home Depot first for the same price. It seems to be a high quality bird food, it smelled fresh and was clean with no insects, webs, or dust.

The ingredients are: Sunflower Chips, White Millet, Red Millet, Peanut Pieces, Cracked Corn.

I've been using it for two weeks and I haven't had any new weed growth or unsightly shells to sweep up...that alone is worth the price. Best of all, the birds seem to love it. There are very fine, sheer millet hulls leftover but they get blown away with the slightest breeze. I'm pleased with this food, I've gotten a good variety of seed-eating birds at my feeders here in So. California. Hope your wild feathered friends enjoy it, also!

I am in a power wheelchair and go outside to my smoking "Lounge" where the bird feeder is. My Lounge is made of six big sidewalk squares of concrete, and I used to have to push broom away the mess from the feeder so my wheels wouldn't carry it into my house. I didn't even know there was such a thing as "no mess seed" but I snapped up Wagner's as soon as I saw it. The birds just love it, my cat loves watching the birds from the window right by the feeder, and I love getting into my Lounge without the sweeping. I have Mourning Doves who eat all that falls from the feeding dish, and there is nothing but weeds anyway by my Lounge which I devised from the area outside my apartment. The price? Well cheaper seed has hulls which you buy but the birds don't eat. I actually buy less of this than I did the messy stuff and a bag lasts me about 4 times as long!! So like the birds but not the mess? Then go shell free, I guess. :)

I live in a condo and there is a balcony. I feed the birds every morning, just a half cup, outside the balcony rail. It's fun for me, and my indoor cat enjoys watching all the birdies. Not a completely shell free mix, but close enough. Small seeds do have hulls which are not eaten.

I've used other premium "no mess" blends from specialty bird brick and mortar stores. It's inconvenient for me to get there to buy in person, and their shipping rates are astronomical, so based on reviews, I thought I'd give this product a try.

The birds absolutely attack this, but they do toss a lot of the millet aside, and I guess the ground feeders didn't get to the discarded seed quickly enough. So it's all ended up germinating in my flower beds. Now, maybe this is my fault for not realizing that millet would germinate even if it's part of a blend labeled as shell and mess free. But, based on other reviews of this product, I didn't think this would be a problem. This stuff absolutely will germinate!!

It's not a huge deal, the birds love it so much that I will just use the remainder of my order in another part of my yard, and just suck it up and go to my brick and mortar specialty bird store for feed that I want to place in areas that I don't want the risk of weeds sprouting. If getting some sprouted millet under your feeder isn't a problem, this is definitely a great seed blend that attracts lots of different birds.

While this does not leave large seed shells on the ground, the birds do leave behind tiny seed husks. (I guess it depends on your definition of "shell".) I have a bird feeder on an apartment balcony, so I didn't want to drop debris on the neighbor's patio and sidewalk below. I mistakenly thought this birdseed would be mess free, but it's not. Otherwise, it's very good quality seed. If I had this in a backyard at a house, it would be great.

CORRECTION, Oct 19, 2015:

The birds do eventually eat 100% of the birdseed. I started using the Kaytee brand advertised as "mess free" (Kaytee Waste Free, 10-Pound Bag), but it left behind the same tiny husks as this one. One day I was lazy and did not refill the feeder right away, and I noticed that the birds were eating the small husks. I use an acrylic bird feeder that does not have holes, so it keeps everything in there. The birds do tend to flay the seed around, so my apartment balcony has bits of birdseed all over but I don't mind. My cat loves to watch the birds hop down to the floor of the balcony and eat the seed that dropped from the feeder.

After trying the Kaytee brand, the Wagner seems better quality. The birds love both brands, though. The Kaytee is a slightly lower price, but I like how the Wagner bag has a zip closure and can stand up on its own. I ended up getting a plastic container for the Kaytee birdseed, but I might consider going back to the Wagner because it takes up less space (smaller bag), and it's easier to dispense with a scoop directly from the bag.

This birdseed may be shell free, but it is certainly not mess-free. The seeds are so small, the birds dump a ton of it out of the feeder and it just makes a huge mess on the floor which will attract rodents if you are not cleaning up daily. I have yet to find a truly mess-free bird food, but this certainly is not it. Will not purchase again.
