My goodness where to start? Prang watercolors have been around for years and years. I have been around for years and years; not as long as Prang, but long enough. I can remember using them when I first started and that was actually in the late 1940s. Since that time I have progressed beyond smearing colors around a piece of paper until I arrive at a glorious dark mess that sort of runs off the paper but that my mom said was "beautiful" anyway. Well, truth be told, I have not progressed much beyond that, but there never-the-less has been some little improvement and I suspect my mom would still tell me my messes are beautiful; her, if no one else.

Anyway, over the years I have used a lot of different paint. Some of the paint has been obscenely expensive..."professional grade" and all that. Some of these paints were very nice; no doubt about it. I still use them often. But I have to tell you that I have never stopped using Prang and continually come back to it. You simply cannot beat the intensity of color and blendability, and you certainly cannot beat the cost for the quality you are getting. As so often happens, the "snob appeal" overrides our logic and good judgment...sometimes cheaper is indeed better; or at least just as good.

These paints are absolutely ideal for the beginner (In reference to the particular set being reviewed here). You are given a large enough palate so that the beginning student is not overwhelmed with trying as many different blends as you are with the smaller selections. These paints are ideal to use in a school setting as the clean up is a snap and if the student is half way good, then their painting will look pretty darn fine also.

I am an experienced painter, and I am familiar with many brands. My main watercolor kit includes winsor newton artists watercolors and a set of series 7 brushes. Right next to those expensive supplies sit two prang watercolor sets. I always use prang in my paintings. It's cheap but it is also some of the best paint I have ever used. This is a must have for anyone doing watercolor.

These watercolors are not sold as professional grade watercolors, but let me tell you, they are awesome. The colors are exact on the color wheel.
They are dense, bright and beautiful. They can be used for even fine art projects, calligraphy, journalling and more.
(Do not confuse these with the Prang Student set, which are a lesser quality).

I've been wanting to get into watercolor painting for a while now. I decided to go with Prang, and boy was I impressed. The colors are highly saturated, and they get excellent drips and splatters. I tried the Lowell 36 paint set, but this is far better than Lowell. If you need watercolors that coat the paper evenly, then go with Prang. I would like to see more colors, but it's not necessary.

I'm not a highly experienced watercolorist, but I've been working with this set of Prang 16 semi-moist watercolors and a pan of 24 Canson watercolors. What I love about the Prang is the color intensity and the subtle gloss to the paints. I assume (not sure) they've included more glycerin than is standard, and that makes the paints very nice to work with and just ever so subtly rich and glossy on the paper. If you really load up your painting with it, the paint will remain slightly tacky even when dry. The Cansons are nice, but very, very dry on the paper, which objectively is neither bad nor good, but I personally find less beautiful.

The product pictured here appears to be a set of eight watercolors, but this is actually the SIXTEEN watercolor set.

These Prang watercolor sets have been around forever *like me*--my old sets came in black metal cases, though. We used them in all of our school art classes. They are still the best for quality, economy, portability and ease of use.

The instructor of my adult art class instructed me to get this set for my water coloring. Another "art materials" website has this set on sale right now for around $8 plus shipping. Amazon's price is a couple of bucks more, but you get free shipping for orders over $25. Anyway, you're going to need some nice watercolor paper, and maybe a good brush or two, plus an instructional book, if you want. Get everything you need at the same time, and pay no shipping. Easy-peasy!

You know what? Prang is usually marketed for kids in the school supply store of your local big box retailer, but it's good stuff. I've never had any problem with them in all the years I've used them. They are not my first choice, but they work great in a pinch. If you are just getting some watercolors for your kid, then forget Crayola and get these instead. Just throw this brush away as it will not produce very good results.

These are kids paints but I use them because they are non-toxic. The are definitely not comparable to the artist quality paints like Daniel Smith or Winsor Newton but they are non-toxic which means I can bring them to restaurants and use them while I am waiting for my food. Some colors are more vibrant and easy to pick up than others. The black is particularly juicy and dark. Overall I really like these paints. They are perfectly fine for sketches.
