Alfred Brendel established himself as one of the legendary pianists of our time. His constantly growing reputation stemmed from his scrupulous approach and his poised manner of playing that implied a respectful vision on the piece he interprets. His imagination has always been in the service of composer's intentions and never in his own moods or musical insights. His style is easily recognizable, for it instantly charms the listener. There is no room for harshness or sloppiness in his renditions. His absolute good taste led him to memorable moments of grace on stage and disc alike.

This year Alfred Brendel is 80 and, although it's been more than two years now since he retired from the international concert platform, his recordings continue to enchant audiences worldwide and make us regret his absence from live concerts. Not only studio-made discs, but especially live recordings are in line to be released. His label DECCA assumed a series of unpublished-yet such live captures from his longish performing career. So, finally a twofer celebrating his 80th birthday has been released to critical acclaim. It comprises a valuable and authoritative version of the mighty Piano Concerto no.1 by Brahms under Sir Colin Davis leading Bavarian Radio Orchestra (Munich 1985) and a witty journey into Mozart's realm by means of the C major Piano Concerto K 503 accompanied by Hans Zender at the helm of the SWR Baden-Baden and Freiburg Symphony Orchestra (Baden-Baden 2002). To these concertante works Brendel added two seductive solo renditions from his beloved repertory: Sonata in A flat major op.110 by Beethoven and Impromptu in F minor D 935 no.1, both recorded in Salzburg Festival 2007.Read more ›
