for those who didnt watch this when it was first on A&E or maybe the Discovery channel years ago, truly missed something special and real, unlike almost every tv show out there these days. the "Hunters in The Sky" documentary was an upclose and VERY personal look into the lives of the ariel warriors.
it captures the hearts of these people. their feelings, the emotions that ran rampant during war. alot of people think of the ones who flew the planes werent really fighting. but as you watch this series, if you were one of these doubters, i think youll have a great change of heart. these were all scared and at the same time brave warriors! their nerves were on edge at all times.
there is one particular piece that ill probably remember the rest of my life. it tells of one mans mission. an escort for bombers. he relaxed, let his guard down for just a moment. disaster! it will simply have you crying with him. gut wretching! if you want a documentary with just videos of planes fighting then you need to buy another series. this is about the people. this is, if not one the best documentary on dogfighting i know. you want the real thing? then get this set.

I had originally bought 8 programs from this 1991 series when originally offered by infomercial on 4 DVDs. Subsequently the other episodes were offered in an expanded set, but unfortunately you had to buy the original 8 episodes in order to get the others, so I didn't do it. I eventually got one of the additional episode DVDs from an Amazon vendor.

Well, now Questar has issued the whole set, all 13 episodes, on 4 DVDs, with another 2 DVDs (which I haven't watched yet) of bonus material, all in compact cases. I have watched the first disc so far and the transfer is just fine. Each of the 13 original episodes is about 22 minutes long.

This series was done with Chris Shores and Raymond Toliver as consultants, two guys who know a thing or two about WW II aces, and with the cooperation of the American Fighter Aces Association. The best part is the interviews with numerous aces (many who are no longer with us), like Adolf Galland, Geoffrey Page, Johnnie Johnson, Hans-Joachim Jabs, Francis Gabreski, Saburo Sakai, Erich Hartmann and several Russians. So the series has a good pedigree!

This is the best series I've found of it's type. I have enjoyed it for 20+ years. It will give you an idea what these guys were thinking and feeling. If you are worried about correctness of footage or even editing you are missing the point. This is about firsthand accounts and interviews of the greatest pilots of a generation. There will never be aerial combat like this again, this is a treasure. Listen to these guys talk. What other series has such a variety of nations top pilots? What other series has the personal element? If you find one let me know, I will purchase it. The book is just as good. This is for entertainment not simply historical content.

I rank the success of a war documentary series on the basis of one or more of the following criteria:

1) scope - How comprehensive is the series? Are there major omissions? How one-sided is it; are differing perspectives offered? Much of this has to do with the implied or stated purpose of the series. Some of them aspire to be more narrow in scope due to the nature of the topic itself and the intent of the creators.

2) historical accuracy - Is the series historically accurate? Does George Washington lead the charge up San Juan Hill? Does Geronimo fire arrows at German soldiers from the walls of Verdun? Is Thutmoses III buried in Grant's tomb? Did Nostradamus predict his own birth? Yes, some series are just this bad.

3) production quality - Is the script well written? Narration good? A poorly delivered narration can render even the best of scripts difficult to sit through. Has the film been diligently restored? Does the sound blare at some points and at others drop off to a point where one strains to hear it? Is there cc?

4) Intangibles - Does the documentary successfully capture the joy, fear and trembling, and essential pathos of warfare? A well written, well produced documentary of the farthest reaching scope is seriously vitiated when it fails to convey this important aspect.

On the count of providing a very personal account of WW II flying aces from all major sides of the conflict, the series succeeds admirably. The personal testimony of the pilots will evoke strong feelings of empathy in even the most stubborn eye.

The production values are also very high. The sound is perfect, the picture quality good with good narration and a fine script.

This set is true to the original series that was shown on TV. However, it also contains 3 additional features - a story about the Red Baron, a video account of the son of a Halifax bomber pilot killed by a JU-88 night-fighter pilot, and a very good account of the use of gliders in WW2. I haven't watched the Red Baron story, yet, but the account of the son of the Halifax pilot was very interesting in that he interviewed the man who shot his father down. He also visited the crater left by the impact of his father's aircraft in Germany, and there he found some debris from that aircraft still present over 60 years later. The glider program (154 minutes) was very good and covered primarily the use of gliders by the US but did include accounts of German glider assaults. Walter Cronkite was interviewed and, in addition to other commentary, spoke about the glider landing he made in Holland during Operation Market Garden. Andy Rooney also gave commentary on gliders. Hal Holbrook narrated the glider feature. I reduced my rating by one star because there is no closed captioning on any of the features. Closed captioning would be good to have because some of the accents are a little hard to understand.
