Jessica Lea Mayfield travels down the shadowy trail of shattering relationships without blame, remorse - or looking back with "what if" longing - on her second album and third overall release.

At age 21, the Kent, Ohio, resident takes her unique alt-country sound as the backdrop to the 11 tracks that each pack a powerful punch from the perspective of someone who clearly separates reality from "happy face" emotions. The opener - "I'll Be the One That You Want Someday" - is an inviting door to what could be love, which then slams shut on "Our Hearts Are Wrong." "Sometimes at Night" is a blunt response to someone seeking answers to how things crumbled, while "Blue Skies Again" is a brief respite on the roller coaster ride. "Trouble" is the standout, with "Sleepless" - a dismissal of advice from friends - rounding out a solid perfecta.

Producer Dan Auerbach - guitarist and vocalist for the Black Keys - brings solid balance to the lyrics and music. Mayfield did not venture too far from home to record this debut for Nonesuch Records (the studio is in Akron), but her chronicles of the endless miles on a long highway will leave a lasting impression.

Jessica Lea Mayfield takes some getting used to. She's unique and a touch strange, but this is good. Last week I bought three girl-singer CDs - this one, Nicole Atkins, and Adele. The one I listen to most is JLM.
At first the songs don't grab you. But plan on having them sneak up on you and insinuate themselves into your consciousness. She's from Ohio but her accent is kinda Southern, slow drawling, altogether entrancing. Deadpan monotone. I agree with critics who say she may be the next great artist, because I want to listen over and over. Her songwriting is above par as well. "Grown Man" is particularly good as is "I'll Be the One You Want Someday".

As an avid music buyer, I rarely buy unknown artists soley based upon the strength of those 30 second samples online...but I instantly bought this album by Jessica Lea Mayfield. Between Mayfield's uniquely Midwestern drawl, the darkly sparce production, and some simple - yet effective - lyrics, this album is completely unique.

Most of the tracks are mid-tempo reflexions on life and love. Even the "upbeat" tracks have a lingering sense of longing and regret to them. This album is perfect for those times when you want smoky, moody music to enhance a study session or a drive around town.

The album is unique for two reasons: 1) Mayfield's voice is completely original (I don't know many alt singers from Akron, OH!) and 2) the clean, understated production values lend themselves to repeated listening.

Listen to "Blue Skys Again" and "Trouble," my two favorite tracks.

I'm seeing Jessica at a festival soon, so I got this album to educate myself. I'm a much better person now. What a great find. Her voice is a big draw, but the music is amazing too. A little bit alt-country, a little bit mellow pop, all wonderful. Reminds me of Julee Cruise, maybe a little Norah Jones even. "Our Hearts are Wrong" is a high point and single I believe. The title song is quite catchy and has some cool percussion in it. My favorite song is "Blue Skies Again". Glad I made the purchase just for that track.

I bought this on 180gm vinyl, and it comes with the CD in a little cover also. I love when labels do that. I'm twice as likely to buy then. Import the cd to mp3 and it's three formats for the price of one. It's also cool to have an LP sized photo of her.

One other note, she's on the recent SPIN magazine compilation called "Newermind", which is artists covering Nirvana's "Nevermind" album. She does a nice cover of "Lounge Act". Free download on SPINs facebook page.

JLM was interviewed on NPR and I liked what I heard, so I took a chance and bought the cd. I was surprised because I listened from beginning to end and loved almost every song. That's really unusual for me - I usually just listen to "the hit" and then months later, move on to the rest of the album. Her voice and lyrics were so addictive, I wanted to listen to the next song. I felt like I was invited into her experience and she was telling me her story in a very cool way. If that makes sense???

i chose this album as it had a stellar review on it from UNCUT magazine. I like that magazine and figured why not give it a try. I had no idea what the music would be like - was simply curious.

Most of my music budget is for CDs - I love album art, liner notes and lyrics. Though truly I simply pop it into my walkman and sit on the porch swing in my yard. One listen I became immediately hooked on this album.

Guitar reminds me of electric Neil Young with Crazy Horse. Production and regarding flawless.
I cant pit into words the talent of the singer/lyricist. excepting, I rarely if ever write reviews.
But this album
sets a precedent, thank you Mayfield. Time for more listening to Tell Me.

This was a slow burner that took a few listens to get, much the way the Scud Mountain Boys or Iron and Wine were for me. Now they, and Jessica Lea Mayfield, are in my desert island mix. Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed. Strong lyrics, a fantastic voice, great musicians and some musical/phrasing hooks you'll find in your head in the middle of the night. Or maybe that's just me.
