...not that it was dead, but I wasnt able to use it without buying an IDE PCI-E controller, which I didnt want to do... Those IDE cables are such an eye sore. So I opted to get this external enclosure instead.

Construction: Feels very solid once you get your drive in there and screwed in completely. Instructions say to make sure you use all of the screws included, and to tighten them as much as possible... DO NOT IGNORE THAT. Your hard drive is spinning a disk at whatever RPM, so it needs to be mounted tightly. Also, always make sure you use the included stand; it helps with vibration dampening, especially since there are no rubber feet anywhere else on the enclosure.
The aluminum looks and feels great. The black paint looks very well done.

Installation was simple. Just a matter of plugging in the IDE port and 4-pin molex and screwing the front plate bracket onto the hard drive. The IDE cable in my situation was a tight fit, but nothing that could damage any components. The molex plug fit well also. The front plate bracket has two sets of mounting screw holes to use depending on your particular hard drive model. Mine fit on the outer most set.

Usage: Its a USB 2.0 enclosure, so expect those speeds. The RPM of the HDD you use may affect speeds also. The included USB 2.0 cable is a good length. The Power adapter cable is a very good length. I didnt find myself cursing it for being too short. People thinking of purchasing this for an old IDE HDD as extra storage will be glad to know that it can be left plugged in and switched off when you dont want to use it, and when you do decide to use it, you just switch it back on via power switch. I can see this being used as an external storage backup drive for laptop users and desktop users alike.

When I ordered this external enclosure (to mount an older 3.5" Hard Disk Drive), I had a bit of mixed thoughts - esp. after reading the comments written by others. When it showed up, my experience was just the opposite!!

This enclosure is well designed, just adequate for mounting a 3.5" HDD into this enclosure. No loose wires, the HDD sits inside perfect, after you tighten the side screws. I assembled it in just 5 minutes - quite an easy task.

I have purchased several external enclosures in the past (Vantec, CoolMax, Enermax etc.) and I can say that this is definitely one of the best. The value proposition for the money you pay is just incredible ($16.99 is what I paid). They could have extended the LED to the front and put their logo in front of that (so that whenever there is a HDD write activity, the LED will blink and so is their logo); however it is just a marketing suggestion (technically not a design flaw).

Thanks to Rosewill and Amazon for delivering this excellent product. I would strongly recommend this IDE to USB external enclosure.

I bought this case for a friend who's previous external hard drive case quit working. Her drive was still good, so all I needed to do was put it in a new one. I had heard mixed reviews on this case, but it's inexpensive so I thought I'd give it a shot.

Installing the hard drive in to the case was easy and when I plugged the drive in to a computer for the first time, the computer recognized the drive right away. I DID NOT have to reformat the drive, so I was able to save the info already on the hard drive. I mention this because some people have mentioned that they had to format the drive before it worked in the new case, this was definitely not my experience and technically speaking, it really shouldn't be for anyone else.

I'm happy with the case and so is my friend, she's grateful that she didn't lose any of her information.

Got it yesterday, installed the disk this morning. No problems. Worked on my Mac & Windows laptops.

Other users should be aware that there are THREE DIFFERENT sets of TWO screws each, of different lengths and head types. If you use the wrong screws to attach the drive to the rails, I could easily imagine that the drive wouldn't then fit into the enclosure (as one reviewer encountered). Follow the directions, beware of user error.

Also, I'm not sure how, but somehow I thought that there was the possibility that just the USB cable could power the drive. Maybe some other drive it could, but mine sure needed the (supplied) external power cable. (Or I'm just wrong and thinking of some other enclosure, of course.)

All I've done is repartition the drive, so I can't speak to the alleged "excellent heat dissipation", but it is light, and it was definitely easy to assemble. So far so good.

You're probably wondering if and how this thing works. Well, it works for me (I use Windows 8, in case you're wondering about compatibility).

Here's how:

When you pull out the rear panel, there is a tray inside for placing your hard drive, along with the IDE and power cables, already inside (you don't need to provide your own cables). Once the hard drive is connected, you use the provided screws to secure the drive onto the tray. Then you slide the tray/rear panel with the attached drive into the enclosure. The rest of the provided screws are then used to secure the whole enclosure. Plug the enclosure's power cord into an outlet. Connect its USB cable to your computer. Switch on the on/off switch on the back of the enclosure. And that's it, it's ready to be used, just like any other external hard drive. Easy!

It also comes with an optional detachable stand for setting the enclosure up vertically. I use it to preserve desk space.

The instructions tell you to format the hard drive before using it, but I did not do this step and have had no problems accessing existing files and writing to the hard drive. If you're worried about having to format your drive, don't be, because apparently it's not a necessary step.

A minor complaint is that the instructions do not explain exactly which sets of screws to use where - three three pairs of screws are provided, each pair a slightly different length. I just guessed which ones go where and it worked fine.

So, anyway, looks like I don't need to toss out those old hard drives just yet. That's a good thing.
