I build two or three Master Grade Gundam model kits every month, so I put lots of stress on my modelling tools. When I lived in Hong Kong, I used to always use these red side cutters from a Korean plastic model company named Academy and which had very accurate and clean cuts. I recently moved to the US without bringing my cutters, and since Academy cutters aren't available in the US, I ordered two of these cutters called the Tamiya Modeler's Side Cutter Alpha.

It's obvious that these cutters are meant to last: the handles are rubbery, and the blades are sharp and thick. I do have problems with quality control, though. One cutter is in perfect condition but the other has misaligned blades. The blades are misaligned by maybe just 1 millimeter but this means that I don't quite get perfect cuts on flat surfaces. Thus, I use the imperfect cutters for cutting parts off the tree, while I use the perfect cutters alongside a hobby knife to clean up the nub marks. The cutters should last longer that way.

The cutters have great build quality and it's just unfortunate that one of the two I received isn't perfect. I'm not sure if I'm unlucky or if there are actual manufacturing issues with this product, but the product is great if you can get a good pair.

Good quality. It is really sharp cutting off the model components quickly and nicely.

Technically, for starter like me, do not cut the components right at the edge of the connecting part. Leave about 2 - 3 mm for art knife, or the model parts might be scratched.
Do not amend the edges with it.

Great product if you use it in proper way.

Been modeling for more than forty years and finally decided to try a cutter that was made for the job.Cutter blades do not make for a nice flush cut.Sub par product due to poor handling.It was loose in the box that barely fit the other item.This caused the outer box to not close properly and they forced it closed and taped it shut.The card with the cutter was crushed against the inner and outer boxes.Shipping did the rest and made a delicate tool unusable.Not bothering about return,lesson learned
