I was looking for a tablet for drawing and was very worried about not buying a Wacom product. I've used many Wacom products and they're all great but I wanted something big, and the larger Wacom tablets are chock full of stuff I didn't need (touch, a mouse, an eraser on the pen, etc.) which made the cost go up. I decided to take a gamble and buy this mostly because of its size and price. I could not be happier! The sensitivity works wonderful (1024 levels is plenty for me, I don't do anything super intricate). The hotkeys are VERY easy to set and they're all customizable. The pen stand, although a minor feature, is very sturdy which is a lot nicer than the flimsy ones I've experienced with Wacom. It supports both Mouse mode (the pen moves the cursor) and Pen mode (the tablet represents your screen, which is perfect for fullscreen drawing) and yes pen mode works perfectly on ALL screen resolutions. The drawing surface has a film on it that can be lifted and you can insert paper underneath, making it a cinch to convert your art into a digital format. I have texted it on Mac OS X 10.8.2 and can not find a single flaw with the device itself. The pen is sturdy and the buttons can be customized. It takes a AAA battery, which actually comes included, and that's nice if you like to have a heavier pen like me. The piece of metal that holds the battery is very flimsy but the battery lasts quite a while and you won't have to deal with it much so I didn't knock a star off for that. The drivers were NOT hard to find if you know where to look, a google search for UC Logic will put you in the right spot and there's drivers for Mac and Windows. Overall if you want a big tablet without the fancy stuff you know you won't use, this is it.Read more ›

I already own a Wacom Intuos5, which is excellent, but wanted a second drawing tablet for backup and travel. Between recent reviews like this:

[link deleted, so google "The Little Monoprice Graphics Tablet that Could"]

and Monoprice's ridiculously low prices, I figured it was worth the experiment to buy one. The main risk for me was whether or not it would work under Linux, since all my professional work is done in Ubuntu (at this writing, 13.10). And while the Wacom works well, the new Intuos5 required considerable fiddling to to get working.

One clue that it would probably work in Linux was that OS X users reported it working out-of-the-box for them, and since OS X is POSIX compliant like Linux, a lot of the core code can be shared. And sure enough, the Monoprice 12x9 worked out-of-the-box for me on my laptop. I was almost disappointed - I'm an old Debian guy, and there was nothing to do! :-)

I'm writing this review so Linux users can take advantage of my experience. And for most Linux users, the above is probably enough. But in my case, having a dual-screen setup but only wanting to use one for drawing, and also wanting to correct the aspect ratio for monitors shaped differently than the tablet, I needed to figure out how to calibrate it and so-forth.

Being the linux guy, I assumed it should be hard to figure out, so started compiling stuff from the Wizardpen project and such... but it was all unnecessary. The answer really came down to simply figuring out which built-in driver was supporting the tablet, and then reading its documentation.

To find the driver, I opened a terminal and typed lsusb. Instantly it was clear that the Monoprice 12x9 is really a "UC-Logic Technology Corp.

One of the issues with using a small graphic tablet to draw is getting smooth lines. You hands tend to be less steady especially when trying to draw while looking at a screen and having you hand moving somewhere away from the screen. With that larger hand movements tend to be smoother. Like drawing on the postage stamp. So a bigger tablet is an advantage, even if you don't use the entire surface it is nice to have it there when needed.

Of course larger 12 x 9 tablets from Wacom can cost three or four times this Monoprice unit. For the price of a 4x5 Intuos you can have this 12x9 incher. No doubt about it Wacom makes the best tablets and nothing beats their Cintiq LCD display units, but at two grand most people can't afford them. I have a larger Cintiq and for professional work doing tight detailed illustration I can not live without it. What I do is this sort of stuff Jaguar D Type Canvas Print / Canvas Art - Artist David Kyte But I found I wanted a standard type tablet for quick touch-ups without firing up the Wacom. This tablet proved to be MUCH better than I thought.

Negatives? Of course build quality is not at Wacom level but you are not going a abuse a tablet anyway, are you? it does not look as nice but who cares?. The pen is not as well balanced as well, mostly due to the fact it uses a AAA battery, too top heavy, Wacom's are self powered. These also do not have the eraser end, I found myself flipping the pen over expecting it to be there, but you can get use to it. There is also no support for tilt and bearing, but I have found little use for this using the Wacom pens. The buttons on pen are shaped awkward.
